Electricians - charge per hour?
Anyone know about how much you should expect to pay for an electrician, per hour? Just for labor, not parts etc?

ETA: I received an estimate for a small job. When the guy was here, he said the job should take about 1 hour, 2 hours TOPS (if there were any problems when they started doing the work). The parts are minimal (a GFI outlet and I guess wire and stuff). The estimate is for over $450 which just seems crazy to me- but maybe I am completely out of the loop when it comes to this kind of thing 
Update: I got 2 more estimates and both were in the $350-$375 range. The guy came to do the work yesterday and was done in an hour.

Electricians - charge per hour?
That sounds like a lot. I had an outlet changed to GFCL and a new cover installed (small job) and it was $250. I’d get another estimate.
Was it to replace/convert an existing outlet or install a new one?

Ugh. That is highway robbery. I think he is basically giving you a price in the hope you don’t call him. Sometimes contractors will give crazy prices to just make a client go away.

Just paid $100 for simple house call to change out existing outlet. This was with established electrician company that has a few trucks out doings jobs every day.

My DH said it sounds a little expensive because it should be around 375 , he did say the amount depends if they have to run a new wire and then he started going into a tangent about deep electrical stuff. Get a second quote.

I think it sounds about right. We've had a lot of work done recently and most electricians work super quick. They can get a lot done in an hour. So if you're having something done that could take up to 2 hours, that number actually sounds very reasonable to me.

We've had a lot of renovations done lately and I've noticed the electrician usually turns out to be one of the most expensive parts of each job. There are a lot of things that figure into the price a tradesperson charges. I'm just assuming that if it's going to take up to 2 hours, it's a pretty significant job. So, it's just my reasoning that if it could take up to 2 hours, $450 isn't bad at all. All the electricians we've used charge by the job, not by the hour. I don't know the details of what you need done, but if it sounds high to you, I'd get multiple quotes.

I did have someone else come for an estimate yesterday and am waiting for the email from them. The first guy said it would likely take no more than an hour (up to 2 IF they had problems, which he didn't anticipate), and based on that, it seemed to me like the job would be charged by the hour. I'm very curious to see what the second estimate is. The guy that came for that one also seemed to think it was a pretty easy job.
