Do you think it is rude to wear a red dress to a friend's birthday dinner?
Here is the dress in question:

of note: my boobs are bigger but they will be tamed. 
I know it is of course rude to wear a red dress to a wedding, but would it be rude for a birthday dinner for exactly the same reason though: that is would be too ostentatious and take the attention away from the birthday girl?

Um no.
I mean Jesus Christ do grown adults need that much attention on their birthday that nobody can wear red?
Or look good?
Perhaps you can go in a burlap sack with your hair in a shower cap and no make up so as not to draw attention away from the guest of honor.
Wear the dress, it's very pretty.
And it's not over the top or anything- yes it's red, but the style is classy and understated IMO

I have never heard that you can't wear red to a wedding or any other party! The dress seems very pretty. It's not flashy or anything. If you will be comfortable in it and happy to wear it, then please wear it without a second thought! Enjoy the party!

Honestly, I wouldn’t because of it being someone else’s day and it’s a big “look at me” color.
Personally I wouldn’t care if someone came to my bday party wearing a red dress because I’m not that way. My sis in law wore a beautiful red gown to my wedding and I loved it. She looks so good in red.
So it really depends on the friend. Would she feel slighted if you wore it? You know her best to know if it would be a big deal or not.
P.S. I love that dress.

The only thing I have heard is not to wear white to a wedding.
Go for it, it is a beautiful dress and the bday girl will not find a problem with it :)

Thank you, everyone, really appreciate your opinions!
I think you guys are right: it might be red but it's an elegant and understated style so it should be fine.
I think i have a fear of looking like I am "trying too hard"and that's why I was questioning the choice.... i also never wear red but i just really liked that dress.
I will definitely have to have it altered though: i am very short and the girls are popping out a bit because the straps are designed to be long enough for a much taller woman. And it is also a bit too long. The struggle is real... :)
I did get it for a steal though so might as well spend a bit extra to make sure the fit is perfect.

A "mature" former boss of mine who was a very chic dresser and wore whatever she liked with very bright colors to the office (while i was in typical nyc black and grey every f day) said something to me that stuck with me since:
"THERE ARE NO RULES JUST WEAR WHAT YOU LIKE"
love that and it has guided me since

I've never heard of that rule for weddings or anywhere else. It would never dawn on me to be upset if someone wore red (or any other color - except white - to a wedding) to an event of mine. Love the dress and the color. Go for it!

i, too, wear almost nothing but black, gray, or brown... although my favorite color is red.
i have been working hard to bring more color into the clothes i wear.

No, not at all. That is great dress. Maybe if you were wearing a red sequin mini dress with a tiara, people might say that you were trying to take attention from the birthday girl, but this is fine.
