2021 is the year of the 17 year Cicadas

https://earthsky.org/earth/17-year-cicadas-broodx-2021

Citizen scientists are reporting the emergence of the Brood X cicadas happening right now. As of May 10, 2021, the Cicada Safari app shows thousands of reports from people spotting cicadas in their own yards. Some of the places seeing the most reports are around Washington, D.C.; Bethesda, Maryland; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Cincinnati, Ohio. Even places as far north and west as Detroit, Chicago and St. Louis have had sightings. If you live within these areas and haven’t seen or heard them yet, just wait.
...

Over the next month or so, billions of cicadas will emerge in a dozen U.S. states, from New York west to Illinois and south into northern Georgia, including hot spots in Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. This group of cicadas, known as Brood X (as in the Roman numeral 10) is among the geographically largest of all 17-year periodical cicadas.

https://www.npr.org/2021/05/18/997998920/the-fungus-thats-making-cicadas-sex-crazy

“ But some of them are getting wilder in their short lives above ground.

A fungus called Massospora, which can produce compounds of cathinone — an amphetamine — infects a small number of them and makes them lose control.

The fungus takes over their bodies, causing them to lose their lower abdomen and genitals. And it pushes their mating into hyperdrive.”

I remember 17 yrs ago hearing the same thing on the news and how there was going to be a crazy amount of these things everywhere, but it wasn't any different than normal. I never see them. I happen upon a empty shell every once in a while, but that's it. I live near several nature preserves, from the way they make it sound, I should be seeing these bugs everywhere. Chat Icon

Yes, I can't wait for them to emerge. I think it will happen in early June because that's when it happened last time. We were swarmed with them and the box turtles had a field day so did my kids since they were in elementary school at the time. They loved BUGS! I was the first to find one and I put it in a kids bug container because I thought for sure I just found a new bug on Earth. LOL Then there were hundreds of those red eyed buggers. So cool!!!!!!

can't wait, they are so harmless, just loud as they are looking for a mate. All they do is leave the earth, climb a tree to find a mate, mate then die. Most get eaten during that climb, by birds, racoons, domestic pets, opossums etc. To me, the sound of the Cicadas = summer

adding: they don't bit, pinch, or harm..

Okay, I looked into this more because, well, I. Eagerly waiting their arrival. I do not think k its our year on long island. My son said it was too early so I looked into it. Seems he is right, we are waiting for brood XVI to emerge. Last emergence was 2008, so 2025. Not to say we won't see/ hear some, we do every year, but that brood was the big one 13 years ago. And I'm glad hmm mentioned they are harmless, they truly are. I have pics of my kids holding them!!oops, it's brood XIV

I don’t think I hear them as much as I did way back when I was a kid. Cicadas chirping is one of the sounds of summer for me when I think about my childhood!

https://a-z-animals.com/blog/why-do-cicadas-only-come-out-every-17-years/

Each brood has a different cycle. Some are annual, some are every 13 years, and some are every 17 years. The ones that hibernate for over a decade don't all come out on the same year, so even if you see and hear them every year, the broods will be different.

You know, I remember that being an intense cicada year. I have a vivid memory of DH turning around in our backyard and seeing one on his back. I remember exactly where I was and we only lived there during 2008.

Has anyone seen any cicadas? I haven't seen or heard any yet, but according to the maps, I'm not in one of the Brood X areas.

I live in Maryland and they are crazy here. My coworker had to use a leaf blower to clear the carcasses off of her walkway. You drive into them on the highway. My husband works outside and they are flying at his face. They are due to die off by July 4th. They are also much louder than the Cicadas you hear every year. We have brood x.

I was in Virginia this weekend and they have a lot of them. One came in the house we were at. They were very noisy.
