mamo and sono every 6 months?

So I had a mamo when I was 38. All clear. Got one recently and they called me back for more images, but they also want a sono done.

When i went for both, I was told i have dense breasts. They did the sono first. The mamo they only took pictures of my left breast.

Afterwards it was recommended that i come every 6 months. No other information was given at that time.

Is this normal? How come 2 years ago my boobs weren't dense then and no other images were needed? This is the part that makes me nervous.

I know they would biopsy if there was any question, but they're only human. Can i ask for a biopsy and then know up front what it is instead of these 6 months visits? A lot can change in a 6 month span...

I’d start there. Also, I always get my mammo/Sono the week AF ends or a few days after it ends bc my breasts are softer and imaging tends to be clearer (I read about it and an old primary told me to go at that time and try to do it around the same time of my cycle each time) when I’m due for AF my breasts are a cup size bigger, very swollen/hard. I would imagine imaging could look a little different bc of that

I am sorry you are going through this.

I have been dealing with this for years and I have had more of each than I can count, along with several needle biopsies and a lumpectomy.

In my experience, I was on the six month schedule when they were "watching" one of my cysts to make sure it didn't grow into anything bad. It sounds like they didn't tell you that was happening, so they might just be acting extra cautiously, which is a good thing, obviously.

They won't biopsy for a "general" concern because it would have to be for a specific lump.

I'm sure it can't hurt to call the doctor and ask if there is something specific they are watching. Then they can set your mind at ease.

I can't speak to the fact that you had a clean mammo at 38 and have issues now because my first biopsy was at 30 (yeah, it's been fun) but our bodies are always changing and our 40s are the extra fun here comes menopause years so who knows what's going on in there lol.

I would ask to speak with the person who reviews the images. At the place I go to you have your images taken then wait ten minutes while they review them. Then, if the woman is under age seventy or if there is an issue over age 70 you meet with the doctor that reviewed your images. The first time the meet you they tell you what they see and go over your boobies with you. Then they hand you your paper with your results. The first time I went they did the ultrasound and the mammogram. Now once a year they just do a mammogram no ultrasound. They only do it for dense breast. If you have other concerns they send you for a multi dimensional mammogram at their other facility. I am in NJ and see Drs. Hirsh and Raticonda. While the building is not the nicest, the doctors and the machines are state of the art and it is close to the hospital.

I’m sorry you’re going through this stress. I’m under the same doctor’s orders myself, every six months just to check on things.

Totally sucks and very annoying. They are probably watching something that may or may not get bigger or changes. Do you have a family history of breast cancer? If so totally worth it to get tested for the brca gene. It doesn’t end the check ups but gives you a little more peace of mind. I am negative but still get called back all the time. I am not as nervous going back anymore due to being negative. Good luck!

With my first mammogram, they found calcification and since there was no earlier comparison point, I had a biopsy about a month later. I had a follow up mammogram 6 months later to make sure there were no changes. Everything was okay. It wasn’t until my next annual that I was told I had dense breasts. Several women in my family also have this and need sonos with the mammogram. I later went for a sono and there were no issues. I’m pretty sure I’m back on an annual schedule now. I would call and ask about any questions you have.

Do you have any history in your family? That could be the reason they want to keep checking more often.
