Can anyone who works in HR share if
this is something they heard? I know Mercer is huge.
Link

Employers are beginning to tack on a special surcharge of $20 to $50 a month to their unvaccinated workers, according to one of the nation’s largest health benefits consultancies.

Mercer isn’t disclosing the names of companies working on the surcharges but said the amount of the surcharge being discussed with these employers is akin to the $20 to $50 a month charges companies already charge workers who smoke.

Aside from a public health reason to encourage vaccination and keep workers and their families healthy, there is also a financial reason. Covid-19 can lead to serious illness and an expensive hospital stay that costs the worker and company-paid insurance, triggering premium increases as well.

How is ok to FORCE people who don’t need a vaccine to get a vaccine?!?!

Could you imagine if your sons and daughters were forced to get the gardasil vaccine at 10 years old?!?! A vaccine for a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer in only females? Would you be called selfish if you fought it? Would you be called ‘anti vax’ if you refused it?

Making healthy people, many young, get a vaccine for a virus that won’t hospitalize them is ridiculous! It’s not going to contribute to ending Covid.

I don't take my company's health insurance so they wouldn't be able to use the health insurance premiums with me

And what companies are charging smokers a surcharge now?
Who the F would admit they smoke if it's going to cause a surcharge in their check??

So they will follow to see if you are fully vaccinated, if you continue to get it every year? How would that even work if you decide you don't want it again.

Would YOU be happy to get charged if you ever decide this vaccine is not for me?

This isn't a federal law, so it's not something that will be affecting every American. It appears to be simply a trend.

From the article: "Mercer isn’t disclosing the names of companies working on the surcharges but said the amount of the surcharge being discussed with these employers is akin to the $20 to $50 a month charges companies already charge workers who smoke.

Aside from a public health reason to encourage vaccination and keep workers and their families healthy, there is also a financial reason. Covid-19 can lead to serious illness and an expensive hospital stay that costs the worker and company-paid insurance, triggering premium increases as well."

This should tell you all you need to know. It's corporate capitalism at work. Get vaxxed, or if you get sick from COVID - we're not paying the price for you.

My job charges a surcharge for smokers and another surcharge if your spouse is on your plan in addition to obviously higher premium for coverage.

They'll probably get away with this as they are a private company.

It is insane to me how people are ok with the government or big business telling them how to live their lives.

I myself chose to get vaccinated. But the things I am seeing are alarming. In FL, they want to sue DeSantis for basically telling parents it is their choice if their children wear masks. Very worrisome for our individual liberties.

Do we really want the government enforcing mandates on our freedoms? We let the government get away with a lot in the name of this pandemic: Forced school closures, mask mandates, quarantines, limited travel, business shutdowns, etc. I'm not sure any of this really affected the trajectory of the disease. It is mind boggling.

This is a very good point! Business owners have had to pay their fair share when workers have gotten quarantined or sick. Family and Medical Leave act gets $$$$$ when you own a business.

I worked for a large company about 20 years ago that did this. If you were a smoker and said you weren’t and ended up with smoking related issues that you ended up in the hospital, then insurance would not cover any of the claims.

Do they fine overweight people too? That's a choice just like smoking and can lead to a ton of health issues and medical bills.

People who drink too much? Can lead to cirrhosis and a host of other issues.

People who are promiscuous and don't' practice safe sex? The STD treatment bills might add up.

Like seriously, when does it end?

And it's funny because these companies act like they are doing you some huge favor by offering you medical insurance but I have seen what my boss pays out of his check every month for this coverage and what his deductibles are.
It's mind boggling. And this is from a very large company, not a little start up without much funds.
It's truly disgusting to be honest.

If yku are required to take a physical for your insurance which I think some companies do they can tell from a test but also if you were a smoker most of them smoke during work and they can’t just stop so I assume their job would know that way too

Is it the Company getting the money or the insurance company?

If it’s going to cost employers more money because they have to take extra precautions or have to do certain things if someone is not vaccinated I can see the reason for the surcharge

Ans for comments that the government is controlling us again I am confused by that comment. The government has always controlled us. There rules and laws that have to be followed. We were never 100% free but we certainly have more rights then I am sure any country or at least almost any country. I think people forget that. We have it much better off.

With that said I sway back and forth on the mandates that are set. I get both sides of the argument

True but I'm thinking of large companies like mine where the headquarters and HR and benefits dept are in another state and there are branch offices all over the country.
So they really wouldn't know that Sally in the LI or Johnny in the Minnesota office are out smoking on their breaks.
I've never heard of having to have a physical for work insurance either though

Yes - you don't need a physical for group insurance for an employer - they need to cover everyone (possibly though if it's a very small employer).
