School supplies - do you buy exactly what is asked for?

Got the list from my kids' school for the school supplies.

I assume you all do something similar - every parent gets a amazon wish list and you're supposed to buy everything on there and drop it off when school starts.

Do you all buy EXACTLY whats on there?

For example, they asked for 3 Composition Notebooks (multicolor covers) - cost is $12
But I can get the plain black and white color cover composition notebooks from the 99 cent store for a dollar each.

They also asked for a giant pack of Post-Its (rainbow colors) but I have a TON of the yellow post its sitting in a drawer.

Just wondering if you all get exactly what is asked for or get something close (get the dollar notebooks but the covers wont be the same as what they asked for, etc)

Thanks

I try to get colors when requested bc it’s easier on the teacher AND student.

But when they ask for 50 pencils and 30 glue sticks….yeah no way. I send them in throughout the school year.

Honestly, yes I do try to get what they ask for. Maybe not the exact brand, but if they ask for specific colors or sizes I do try to stick to their exact list since I don't know why they need a certain color, etc.

I got everything from Target, ordered online, and prices were very low. A five pack of multi-colored composition notebooks was $4.

I always got exactly what they asked for. I assume they ask for certain things for a certain reason. I remember the teacher saying they wanted say, a red notebook for math and green for science. They wanted to keep it all the same for all kids.

Unfortunately, while I get trying to save money too as one year it cost me $90 for supplies for both kids, it won't be worth it if they truly need special things and you will have to spend more money in the end.

Very good point everyone about certain colors might be for certain things.

I'll just order from the wish list - thanks

I get what they ask for. But I will send in the notebooks and folders labeled with my kids name. One year they gave my kid the 10 cent folder when I had bought the nicer $3 plastic folders. I made the teacher give my kid back what I bought. I have no problem sharing scissors, crayons, makers, colored pencils, glue sticks. But if I am buying the expensive folder my kid gets to use that one. Not the crappy ten cent one that will tear day one.

I think by multi-color composition books - they just mean different color fronts. You can find them at Shop Rite, Target and Staples for $0.50 each (although this weekend when I was looking for one at Shop Rite they only had black).

If they specified rainbow post-its - they probably use a different color for different things.

ETA - I just re-read that it's an Amazon wish list - you can buy things elsewhere for cheaper, it doesn't have to be the exact same composition book as long as it's wide ruled (if asked). I think the wish list is just to make shopping easier for parents.

For post its I probably would buy multi colors. For marble notebooks I usually don't if they aren't available when I am buying. You can always take a marker and color the outside of the pages to the specific color the teacher is requesting so that it is easy for your child to quickly grab it from their desk. I refuse to stress over school supplies anymore - each year the amount of waste that comes back home on the last day of school blows my mind.

I can't agree with this enough!! OMG it drives me nuts!

I practically have an entire years worth of supplies in a bag in my basement from everything that never gets used each year.

woah - you get supplies BACK?

The last year that DD went to school in person, we had to buy headphones for the class.

I asked how the headphones are stored (they were stored in a bin) I asked to put her headphones in a bag (to prevent lice) and the teacher thought I was weird.

But anyway, end of the school year we didn't get any supplies (or headphones) back

Wow. We are supposed to label headphones with their names. Pre-covid my son said someone else was using his headphones and he tossed them because he had earwax. I emailed the teacher and said that I am replacing the headphones and they are not to be shared. But that was the only sharting incident.

Same, I just bought new backpacks. The rest of the supplies came home unused including their notebooks (they only used half of what was actually requested) and I did get their scissors back too. I am having them reuse a lot of stuff.

Re: School supplies - do you buy exactly what is asked for?

I always did. I figured maybe there was a reason they wanted certain colors- for organizational purposes.
If they asked for a certain BRAND of crayon or pencil though- no- I got the Target brand

School supplies - do you buy exactly what is asked for?

Yes, especially the colored notebooks. It's easier for the kids and teachers so they can just say pull (as an example) the english notebook that was requested to be blue and the kids are looking through all the black and white ones trying to find it. For the amount of pencils and glue sticks, no I do not. I buy a few and replenish throughout the year.

I always buy what they ask for- the teachers color code things for class so I respect that even if it costs a tiny bit more- Staples has great sales right now.

Most of the time yes with the exception of name brand unless it's on sale. I agree with the poster above about Staples. We bought a bunch of DDs school supplies there and they had amazing sales.

Yes, but I always try to find a sale. Color codes help keep the kids organized in elementary school so you want your child to be able to follow the direction quickly. Ex. Take out your red notebook so we can do our mat h, etc. Once middle school started, I NEVER followed the teachers supplies unless it was for calculators, etc.. They went with, a small binder with dividers, loose-leaf and a couple folders. Good luck to all the students and parents this year.

Yes. As a teacher I know that we usually ask for specific things for various reasons. Usually color coding for subjects, etc. or if we ask for certain brands, it’s usually because from experience, they work much better than others. For example Elmers works so much better than rose art or staples brand. Even pencils. The Ticonderoga sharpen so much better than any others lol. We have learned a lot over the years about supplies ??.

I agree, crayola crayons are vastly superior to rose art. When my kids were in elementary school the teacher told me she would just throw out the rose art crayons before they made it into the share bin if there was only one kid who brought the brand in.

This!!! Crayola, Elmers, etc…they are worth the extra money!

As for my own kids, our district does kids that you order so whatever is in the kit is what they get.

Last year we ordered the box from the school and it had crappy glue sticks and pencils... I refuse to order the box now as DS threw out the pencils and glue since they didn't work.

Ticonderoga, Elmers and Crayola are definitely worth the extra $$.

Re: School supplies - do you buy exactly what is asked for?

Get colored composition, but not at $4 a pop.

I used to get exactly what was on the list, but then realized I am wasting money on expensive pencils, color coding books that my son doesn’t use or maybe throws in the trash. Who knows what happens when he enters the supply vortex. He is always walking around with a quarter inch pencil, with no eraser that looks like he ate for lunch. On top of that it’s never the pencils or pens I buy him. Color coding books, I stopped because he is old enough to know the difference, on the small percentage he actually uses it to take notes. So yea, I’m over the list and throwing my money in the trash.Chat Icon
