Yes. As a teacher I know that we usually ask for specific things for various reasons. Usually color coding for subjects, etc. or if we ask for certain brands, it’s usually because from experience, they work much better than others. For example Elmers works so much better than rose art or staples brand. Even pencils. The Ticonderoga sharpen so much better than any others lol. I agree, crayola crayons are vastly superior to rose art. When my kids were in elementary school the teacher told me she would just throw out the rose art crayons before they made it into the share bin if there was only one kid who brought the brand in.
Last year we ordered the box from the school and it had crappy glue sticks and pencils... I refuse to order the box now as DS threw out the pencils and glue since they didn't work.
Ticonderoga, Elmers and Crayola are definitely worth the extra $$.
That’s stinks! Ours had all crayola, elmers and Ticonderoga. I think that’s why I’m okay with buying it lol
I refuse to pay for dollar store or store brand supplies

School supplies - do you buy exactly what is asked for?
My goodness - just spent $125 on DS kindergarten supplies (from the amazon wishlist) and I didn't even get all of them.
Now I'm looking at the DD's second grade amazon list and its wacky.
For example - 6 pack of special plastic folders is $16 plus $10 shipping (its third party, not sold by amazon)
Pencil case - $13 bucks

My 2nd grader needed a ton of supplies (Crayons, pencils, pencil case, wipes, ziplock bags, folders, scissors, tissues, binder, Dry erase markers, sharpie marker, etc) and I don’t think I even spent $30.

Yes - I got plastic folders for $0.50 at Target. Sometimes Amazon is ridiculously overpriced for items and you can do better elsewhere. Since it's being shipped to your house - you are better off ordering from elsewhere. I reused a lot of things since they came back in perfect shape (and I had duplicates from last year's hybrid learning) and I definitely spent less than $50 for two kids, including a $10 calculator.

Target brand crayons are pretty much Crayola without the label.
They are the same quality.
Way better than Rose Art.
Of course, if we are using them to create priceless works of art, then yeah. But for some coloring in class, they are just fine.

Ended up getting everything for DD - $150.
The folders are "special" ones labeled "Homework".
The pencil case is some big one that looks like a makeup case
Some of the notebooks asked for on the list are made with recycled sustainable paper. Maybe thats why some of the books are more expensive.
We have a ton of plastic pencil cases that could be used, but thats what the teacher asked for.
Since all the supplies will go into a pool (I assume) then I figured I have to follow the exact item the teacher asked for.
And we have never gotten school supplies back - including headphones that we purchased - I always thought that is what is supposed to happen.
Once you drop off the supplies, you never see them again.
*shrug*

On the list is a box of dry erase markers (10 pack) - 20 kids in a class, thats 200 markers.
I assume they will not go through 200 markers in a school year, or maybe they do.
They also asked for plastic sheet protectors - 200 pack. At 20 kids, thats 4,000 sheet protectors, wtf.
I assume the teacher asks for a lot in case some parents do not buy

Wow, what grade is this? That is A LOT of money IME for one kid. I had 2 kids and at the height of the school supplies, I spent about $90. Public school if that makes a difference.

Okay, I have 3 elementary school aged kids and I spent under $100 on all 3. That is ridiculous.
I remember when my first son started kindergarten, his teacher wanted 30 glue sticks (x18 kids). At open school night, I jokingly (sort of) asked her if she was running an etsy sweatshop in there. What the heck was she doing with all of those glue sticks?!
To answer your original question, I always buy the colors asked for. I try to buy the brands they request and as others said, they tend to be superior so worth the extra few cents. But sometimes I can't. For example, DS2's teacher wanted an 8 pack of crayons. They only came in 10 packs at Staples so that's what he got.
