How has your school year been so far?

Hi everyone, I was wondering what kind of experiences you and your little ones having so far this school year? I am more interested in Middle Schools where some kids are vaccinated while others aren't. I assume non of the schools have remote learning anymore and it's fully in person, the way it should be, but are there any adjustments or modifications that you or your little ones are experiencing?

Thanks and be well!

Jr. High for both my girls. Same protocols as last year so nothing much has changed. They both were in school full time since Sept 2019.

Thankfully the school year is off to a great start for both of my kids.

My DS is in 3rd and my DD is in 8th. Aside from masks (except at lunch, gym and recess) the school year looks like normal. Both kids are eating in the cafeteria again, my daughter is back to having a locker and changing classes and both school buildings have reinstated after school clubs, sports, etc. There is NO remote option and we're back to a full school day, five days a week with bussing for all if needed.

My kids are thrilled and have really enjoyed being back!

How has your school year been so far?

This is all good news, really love that we are going back in full time, my only problem is that our 11 yo is not allowed after school activities or clubs like Basketball or Track and Field because he is not yet vaccinated.
He is still thrilled to see his friends and be in school environment again, so far no cases either, it's just so good to see them back to some kind of daily schedule & discipline.

So far as normal as it’s going to get. A little freedom with masks when outdoors for recess but they can’t mix with other classes and eat lunch in their classroom. Masks indoors and only a couple breaks. My kids wear very thin ones so they are comfortable.

My HSers are doing great. It’s awesome having everyone back in person. There’s so much energy in the classroom.

With that said, a small school near me had to go virtual last week since a bus driver tested positive and he does 3 routes and then other drivers/staff needed to quarantine as well so there was no one to drive kids to school. Plus several students tested positive unrelated to the driver’s case. I think my DH might start driving our son again since I don’t want him to miss school for a 10 day quarantine due to the bus.

How has your school year been so far?

My middle schooler is back full-time in person. Masks worn all the time except for lunch and "mask breaks" which my kid says are stupid. The one thing DC hates is continuing to do classwork on the chromebook. DC wants to know why it is being required if the students are in the classroom.

Re: How has your school year been so far?

My DD just started Middle School.
Other than masks- they are pretty much normal.
Full time in person every day
Eating the cafeteria
Chorus and band are back
After school clubs are back
And we're allowed in the building again for PTA meetings, open school nights etc

ETA- but we were back full time every day in person all of last year too so this is nothing new.
However, there are less restrictions now like being able to eat in the cafeteria , etc

The only main difference from when they returned full time in April is now that if you maintain 3 ft of distancing and masking, you don't have to quarantine.

The school is allowing outdoor activities at school buildings too.

Other than the masks, everything feels pretty normal. The students are clearly happy to be back, and the classrooms are truly bursting with energy.

We moved away from NC last school year in March. The school was a total nightmare dealing with w Covid, and the virtual was a complete joke. You blame your son for goofing off, I was actually listening and watching these virtual classes. Total joke. We moved away (now 6th and 7th grade)and my kids were so far behind their peers we had to work work work for months to catch them up. Good luck to all these kids in NC. Glad you feel safe with w kids being masked , but the majority of kids have failed the state tests. Did you know that ? Failed. My move with kids in school from NY to NC is a huge regret.

They eat outside in the rain?
What about when it gets cold in the winter?

Some of these schools are making kids sit on the floors and face walls. My kids were made to sit apart, facing the same direction, and not allowed to talk while eating. They had to eat and could only talk after the mask was back on. Truly disgusting

When it’s yucky out our kids ate in the halls 6ft apart. Now they are all spread out in the cafeteria and outside on nice days.

Our students eat in the auditorium on inclement days.

Hi, yes we are in NYC schools, 1st day was just out of this world, 1500 kids in middle school, basically whole block was covered with people end to end, but somehow within 1 hour they were able to get everyone in, they really got this covered and I hope nothing bad happens that could disrupt the school year. So far not a lot of homework, that's one thing I am not so happy about, maybe they just want to slowly re-adjust kids? I am not sure, I just feel like we lost almost year and a half and they didn't learn much in 5th grade, I hope they bring them up to speed.

Where are parents from here? I never thought to ask but I see parents from other states post too. Would anyone sharing their experience mind sharing the school district they are in? We were supposed to be in Commack or Smithtown SD this year, but we were exhausted and disappointed after several properties of interest went for unreasonable amounts, we will be waiting for mid-semester, maybe even 7th grade now.

It’s going ok- clubs and sports are back. Just the cafeteria overflow is the auditorium and it’s been difficult eating off your lap. Hope they find a solution there. Also, no lockers so the kids are carrying a lot this year including their sports equipment all day. My son is complaining of neck pain from it now, neighboring districts are allowing lockers. Not sure the hold up.
In person is leaps and bounds better than virtual

What's the reason for no lockers?

My school had no lockers last year. I believe because they’re right on top of each other.

We are in NYC schools too.. (just outside of Nassau) My daughter was 100% remote last year, so this is her first time back in school in a 1 1/2 years- she started middle school this year. She's liking it so far. They really aren't allowed to take off their masks, she said lunch is at single desks, 3 feet apart, no one facing each other. But they only have about 15 mins to eat and then they go outside, where they take off their masks. Wonder what will happen when it's bad weather? No lockers ( but they can leave stuff in their homeroom) and no lockers/changing for gym...I guess because they are too much on top of each other. I did see they announced they will be testing a random sample weekly now (instead of bi-weekly), BUT they won't have to quarantine as long as the guidelines (spacing/masks) are followed, so that's good. They are already signed up on google classroom....and all assignments are posted & turned in there...so they are ready for a seamless transition if needed. I haven't heard that there will be no clubs/activities if not vaccinated (my DD is 11, so she is not)
