PTA donations - does your school suggest an amount?
Just wondering what your school suggests as an amount for PTA donations.
This is what our kids school recommended: The suggested donation per child is $1,500 or 1% of household income or as much as you feel comfortable giving. No amount is too much or too little!
Ouch, $1,500 per kid is ALOT! (in my opinion) What are we paying taxes for, if we still have to buy school supplies (spent over $300 on the school supplies they asked for) and we also are "supposed" to pay $1,500 per kid. (small vent)
Of course they list what the money goes for, etc....so of course we feel that we have to give the amount. We don't want to short change our kids.

Re: PTA donations - does your school suggest an amount?
Ummm no - that would be $4500 for me since I have 3 kids. We pay PTA dues which I think are $40 for the year. Other than that I don't donate anything to the PTA. We do have a separate organization that fundraises throughout the year and we donate to that but not close to $4500.

I’m on the PTA Board for one kids school and a committee chair for the other kids school.
Neither school asks for that.
It’s $10 to join each PTA and they get 70% back. They have various fundraisers throughout the year but you don’t have to participate in any of them (but most people do some).
ETA - and I’ve never been asked to spend that much on school supplies, the PTA does supply kids and they are well under $100 per kid.

These folks are good, they really work on your emotions (or maybe thats good marketing)
On the online donation form they write: "How much would you spend on your child’s education?" (who would be the one who says "I'm only going to spend 5 bucks on my kids education" of course you want to spend a lot to help your kids)
Then they list common monthly charges: Netflix - $10 Starbucks - $70 Cellphone - $100

That is crazy.
Do they give you a list of what they spend $$ on?
A lot of the PTA spend in our schools goes for things like assemblies and special events which have been dampened by Covid. You can ask for a copy of their financials (they typically give them at meetings) to see where all of this money goes.
I assume they just ask for a lump sum instead of doing any actual fundraisers?
ETA - if they are asking for that much per family they either aren’t getting it, are buying $$$ gifts and assemblies for the school or are greatly overspending for things.

Re: PTA donations - does your school suggest an amount?
OMG no!
It’s $10 to join the PTA. That’s PER FAMILY.
If they asked for $1,500 per child I would drop dead right there on the spot, as soon as I stopped laughing.

PTA donations - does your school suggest an amount?
the email says it goes toward: TAs, professional development, PPE supplies, remote learning essentials (though this year they are not using remote learning and we never receive anything from the school last year when we were remote) etc.
We were remote last year, but the previous year to that I THINK I remember a few in person fund raisers. I remember at least one - because at one of them we bought tshirts and cupcakes for the kids.

Oh - and I assumed it was for each kid, but perhaps it is per family - since I only got one email and not an email for each kid.

Re: PTA donations - does your school suggest an amount?
I would NEVER give that kind of money to the PTA and I've NEVER heard of any PTA asking for that kind of money either.
I was on the PTA board myself for two years and all we ever expected or hoped for was for families to join the PTA and pay the nominal membership dues of $15-20/family. Then of course the hope was that throughout the year families would participate in PTA sponsored events which would help to raise money for the school, teachers, events, and students.
Never in a million years would I think a PTA would ask for the kind of money you're talking about, $1500??? That's nuts.

I am pretty sure the PTA can only pay for things that benefit the children with the exception of teacher appreciation breakfast. Assemblies, recess toys, playgrounds, festivals, etc. at least that’s what my PTA spends the money on.

Do you go to a public school?? The PTA is not responsible for any of those things. Those should be paid with tax dollars, not to mention the millions that most districts received in coronavirus relief.
I would be very suspicious of where this money is going.

Wow, this is a public school? Never heard of that and just got out of the schools after over 30 years. If you want to join the PTA and pay the membership of $7-10 IME over the years.

What??!! That’s insane. You can join the PTA for I think $10 per person. I would have no problem telling them they are in insane.
Then the PTA fundraiser for other expenses.
Also there are rules what the PTA is allowed to do with the Money. What you listed does not sound stuff they are supposed to be using it for.
If I cared enough I would be tempered to report them to the state PTA requesting they look into what’s going on and what the money is being spent on.

PTA donations - does your school suggest an amount?
Do you go to a public school in NY? Everything you mentioned can not be purchased by a PTA. They should be reported to the state. I have been president of many PTAs in my district and the most we ask for is the membership dues which depending on the school runs from 10 to 20 dollars. For our 6th grade class we ask for 40 dollars to cover their extra graduation activities for the year. Other than that, there are multiple fundraisers but it is never ever pressured to participate and it is never anyways near the amount you mentioned.

I don't think the money is for joining the PTA, its a donation to the PTA. The kids go to school in a public NYC school.
Who knows what the money is really going for, probably like most charities where 2% goes to stuff and then 98% goes to "operating expenses" :)

Re: PTA donations - does your school suggest an amount?
Is this definitely the PTA that asked you for this money? We have another group that does fundraisers throughout the year to enhance things in our district. People do donate a lot of money to them. They have initiatives and in the past have paid for all of the smart boards in our schools, supplied chromebooks, provided funding for science labs and media centers, etc.

first paragraph of the email: needs the support of our families to ensure that we have the necessary resources to provide our children with the best education and with a healthy and safe learning environment. The PTA's Family Fund is our most efficient fundraiser and raises more than half of our annual budget.

They are asking 1500 per family and that is only half their budget? Are the halls paved in gold or something. I think someone needs to take a good look at the DOE school budget if they are asking parents to supplement this much.

Something just doesn’t sound right. I remember one time someone was telling me a woman in our PTA’s husband was getting paid $1,200 to paint something in the school. $1,200? It wasn’t like it was his business and they were contracted to paint all the rooms. People will take advantage of as much as they can if you allow them.

I live in a pretty wealthy area and our taxes are high and our district is good and we still have a foundation that fundraisers to supplement the school budget, in a large way. I would think that if you live in a wealthy area in NYC that parents might prefer to supplement the public school they are zoned for rather than pay for private school. Of course it could never be mandatory but if enough parents are willing to contribute, everyone benefits. I would never feel under any obligation to donate any more than I could afford and desire to give. For myself, I would personally prefer to donate to a school in an underserved community than to give the already privileged children in my community even more of an advantage, but that’s just me.

Re: PTA donations - does your school suggest an amount?
My PTA WISHES all families would donate $1500 LOL
Like everyone else said, its $10 to join. We give like $20 per kid to the class moms for events throughout the year and then we are asked to partake in the fundraisers.

I live in a wealthier area too and with all the money the district raises in taxes there is no way parents around here would contribute anywhere near this amount. At least the majority would not. Most Districts, especially on LI get enough in taxes and aide from the fed and state to make their schools desirable to those who live there. If they do not then a hard look at spending needs to be done.
I do agree with donating to underserved communities and I actually brought that up to our Board at the beginning of Covid. We already had everything to have us in school full time at the start of Covid and it would have been nice to "adopt" a sister school and help them out with teachers, the remote schooling and computers. But unfortunately that did not happen.
