Nobody has said there aren't people who don't try to keep up with others. The point you're missing over and over again VB is WHY DO YOU CARE???? What anyone does with their money, whatever the choices people make for themselves is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS and unless you know someone's financial picture or are part of their household stop making assumptions about their happiness, their debt load, or their motivations for doing things. It makes you look petty, envious and insecure.
You are overly concerned about what everyone out in the world is doing from how much they have, where they live, the size of their house, what they spend, if they are vaccinated, if they wear masks and the list goes on. Do you and mind your own damn business. Nobody in the world owes YOU an explanation for how they are living their life and that's the point everyone is trying to get across to you.
If someone goes into debt at Xmas........their business.
If someone wants to buy a two million dollar house........ their business.
If someone wants to wear a mask until the end of days....... their business.
If someone wants to spend all of their money on vacations and material things....... their business.
Nobody cares what YOU think about everyone and everything in the world. ALL you do on LIF is rail on against anyone who lives their life differently than poor little you. You are the most cynical, negative, grumbling, conspiracy ridden human I've ever come across.
Welcome Back!!! So nice to see you back in your true form. I know the holidays are stressful and hope you are ok as it sounds like you are having a rough time already.
I am sure a few Hallmark movies on that TV that cost thousands of dollars will help a bit
Oh and no, NO ONE is jealous of you and how you spend your husband's money. Most appreciate things more when they earn them and not just sit back and take.
You're such a head case. There really isn't anything else to say, it's very clear you have serious issues. This entire diatribe from you is laughable at best.
It's so clear that her obsession with other people, how they spend their money and trying to put down anyone who has more/spends more than she does are obviously signs of her insecurity and jealousy. She can deny it all she wants - the fact that she views everything as a competition, and everyone doing things to "show off" is nothing more than proof of that. The more she protests, the more proof of her jealousy comes out. (I have personal experience with someone in my life who was exactly like this - to the extent that they actually told me they believe I did things, went on vacations etc. JUST to show her up . Some people will never understand that it is SO completely NOT about them, but just about living life the way I (or you - general you) want to. It's called narcissim)
I never said it had anything to do with my life and showing ME up. That is their issue whom they are trying to impress and once, again, sigh....did you watch that video? This is not something I have made up in my head but I am old enough to see what has gone on through the years and with social media people try and impress others every single day. I feel bad for people who have to go into debt and spend all their time and energy just to be bigger and better than someone else.
I actually don't do many things that people jump on the bandwagon and do. It is just not my cup of tea. Even if I have the money, I don't find the need to do what everyone else is doing.
You've made your view of the world and how you view other people VERY clear. Of course you didn't come right out and say it had anything to do with your life - but the fact that you think people do things only to compete with others or to show off is very telling of how you feel about anyone who does or has more than you. Protest that all you want - your words speak volumes (and the video you're talking about - a COMMERCIAL???? Yeah, that's real life right there )

I read some of the posts not all. I thought the true idea of Christmas was not about gifts. Isn't it about the birth of Christ. Shortage or not, it's a good lesson there is more to this holiday and life than hundreds or thousands of dollars spent on toys. Less is actually more.
Exactly but are you new to all of this? People get worse every year with more decorations and gifts. It’s all a competition unfortunately.
I'm not new to this, I think its absurd every year when people talk about spending hundreds or thousands of dollar on each child, not just on this holiday but easter etc. We are a very wasteful country in many respects. The amount of ordering on line, just because... crazy to me. I understand To many people it's not.
It's a competition because adults allow it to be, I'm not sure why either. Growing up, if I wanted something because others had it, my father would say, what Mr & Mrs have in their home/own is good for them, in this house we dont have it. End of story
Agreed. It’s not going to stop unfortunately though as things seem to get worse. Everyone wants bigger and better. Look at Halloween. The decorating was crazy this year. One trying to outdo the rest.
Or, maybe some people just really enjoy decorating - for themselves, not as a so called competition. Maybe you see everything that way, but not everyone does. I buy gifts for people I love and care about because I really enjoy doing something to make them happy - whether it's a $20 gift or a $100 gift doesn't matter. What matters to me is trying to do something for someone else. It's not a competition unless you make it one. Are most holidays over-commercialized? Sure. But it's extremely cynical to believe that it's all about "competition."
I don’t think it’s competition at all and I don’t think it’s keeping up with the Joneses. I don’t really care how people spend their money. Then again, I sat and debated spending 3€ on an N95 Xmas mask. I bought three but the debate was strong in my head. . I bought three, but I’m not trying to compete with anyone for the best mask.
So what do you think keeping up with the Joneses means?
I know what it means and I find your question odd.
People spend their money on things they want. Who cares?
Why do you care so much?
Some of these comments are ridiculous I don't know why people care so much what others do. It's so weird.
My tree was up on my Birthday, which was well before Thanksgiving. I decorate a lot. I do a lot. I buy a lot. My kids have a lot of great experiences. Not to "show" it to anyone else. Because *I* enjoy it. My kids enjoy it. The end. It's getting old to see the "showing off" comments when it comes to how other people do life and what they do with their money. Live and let live.
Exactly! ITA with you.
I decorate before Thanksgiving too and put up multiple trees and go over the top with baking and gifts for all because I absolutely LOVE the holidays. I love the festivities, the decorations, and spoiling everyone I love. I don't care if anyone even sees my house at the holidays, I decorate for myself and my family. It's the most wonderful time of the year!!
I actually LOVE that so many have decorated early. I love this season and it goes by so fast. I love driving home from work and seeing all the fun decorations. I love seeing Christmas trees in windows. I hope this is a trend that continues. My year end is always so busy that I never get time to "stop and smell the roses" so the earlier - the better IMO.

Not sure what world you live in but that IS real life for MANY people. If not they wouldn't have to make one to help people out with their debt.

I love it so much too. The world feels just a little bit smaller and kinder at Xmas time, I like to prolong that festive feeling as long as I can, especially since the season goes by so fast.
Last year I decided to leave one of the big trees in my den up through winter. I took down the obvious Christmas'sy ornaments and did a whole snowy, woodland creature, rustic theme. I took down the stockings on the mantle but left the lighted garland with pinecones and winter berries. It made everything so cozy throughout winter, especially on the snowy days.
Love Christmas so much!!!

I agree that it should last longer - nothing I hate more than seeing a tree at the curb on 12/26. I like to keep Christmas for the 12 days of Christmas- up to Little Christmas. It keeps the festivity going in a very dark, gloomy time of year. I'd actually rather that then to be looking at in October- it just feels out of place to me. But to each their own!

I try and enjoy each holiday and events that come each month. Life goes by so fast that to wish some things would come sooner, I feel forget to remember everything else in between.
Now my family couldn't care less if I decorated but I just can't do that. It would just not be Christmas without some type of tree or decorations. It is a lot of work though so I need a weekend dedicated to doing it all. This weekend is not going to work so might have to do some on days I am off. My house is small though so it gets cluttered quickly so I am the one that will undecorate right after Christmas as it can get too much. One year I had a bigger NYE party and didn't have the room so had to take the tree down.

Honestly if it wasn't for my daughter I'd skip the damn tree I hate decorating that thing for hours on end only to have to take it all down again a month later. I'd throw up some twinkly lights and understated pretty decorations around the house, decorate the mantel, do some outside lights and call it a day. I'm just way too lazy for this- I am dreading putting it up next weekend. I keep putting it off. I hate clutter too and also have a very small house. It also makes me itch when the tree doesn't match the room so my tree has to be all coordinated with the room decor because I can't take anything clashing... LOL

Exactly. It is A LOT of work. I have hundreds of ornaments and put them all out on the tree and it is just exhausting after awhile. Then trying to figure out what to put out to decorate as I only have so much room. Then everyone putting their stuff in between the decorations because, again, there is no other room to put stuff.
I can see why my mom doesn't even bother with a tree anymore unless she is entertaining for the holidays. Just does simply little things that she can put away in probably less than an hour.

No one said EVERYONE does things to show off but if you don't think things have gotten bigger and bigger through the years TO show off, then you are living under a rock.
You are a photographer, correct? Isn't this a BIG thing now that so many do to be like everyone else? Have your shoots gotten bigger and bigger and more extravagant over the years?
Nope, my photoshoots are pretty much timeless, classic family photos. But, you know that, because you have seen them
And I'm not even sure what you are saying here. Are you saying that people book family photos to show off? Photos are something people actually treasure forever, and nothing new. I have photos from when I was little with my mom and sisters at Olan Mills, and those are photos I absolutely LOVE to have.

I treasure photos too. That was not my point. You can't deny that things have changed over the years where photo shoots (maybe not yours) were simple and now people will pay hundreds if not thousands in different locations.
Just like parties used to be simple and now you have these kids parties that cost what a wedding costs.

It was a commercial selling a service...NOT a documentary. Holy moly. Who cares who bought what on black friday? Or how someone decorates their house. I enjoy when neighbors try to one up each other. Enhances my viewing pleasure. Stop using a freakin commercial as your evidence. Ridiculous.

Well if you still email your family how disappointed you are with them for their gifts, or lack of any (since you know they COULD afford them but I thought you didn't care about that?) I could see no one visiting you also to see your house on the holidays.

It was a commercial selling a service...NOT a documentary. Holy moly. Who cares who bought what on black friday? Or how someone decorates their house. I enjoy when neighbors try to one up each other. Enhances my viewing pleasure. Stop using a freakin commercial as your evidence. Ridiculous.
You totally missed the point.
Yeah, I did.. I missed the point... LOL Funny.. right back at ya.
There are actually threads on this site about keeping up with the Joneses so nothing new.

Best thing I ever spent money on was the pics I had done of my kids. A good photographer, as you know, can capture that something special about your children that no cell phone pic you take on your own can. Such special memories.

Well if you still email your family how disappointed you are with them for their gifts, or lack of any (since you know they COULD afford them but I thought you didn't care about that?) I could see no one visiting you also to see your house on the holidays.
WTF are you talking about? This comment makes ZERO sense and has absolutely nothing to do with my comment.
Stop rambling and concerning yourself with other people's lives. You really come across as such aan insecure loser on these boards. I pity you.
You don't care what people spend their money on but you sure was pissed that year your kid didn't get a gift even though the person wasn't hard up for money.
When you post things like the last items - it makes it appear as if you have some serious mental health issues. you have a weird and perverse obsession with Hofstra.

I literally have no idea what you're talking about.
Your comments and obsession with others is so bizarre.
O.kay
No obsession. Just don't say things that you don't mean. You DO care how people spend their money and told everyone about it too.
Again, no idea what you're rambling about.
I'll leave you to your crazy, I have better things to do with my time that argue with a nut job who very clearly has no purpose in life outside of this forum.
Do you flip out on people that much that you can't even remember flipping out about someone not getting a gift even though you KNOW they had money to get one? Doesn't that make you that same type of person you accuse others of being, worrying about how people spend their money?
