Any guesses on whats wrong with DD's leg?
For a week now DD wakes up and her leg hurts. Its the back of the knee and she has trouble straightening it or walking on it (because she can's straighten it) for awhile. By mid morning its back to normal.
I thought perhaps she was sleeping on it wrong or something (like when you wake up and your neck is jacked up) but it does not seem to be the case.
She was taken to the doctor yesterday and the doctor said "She could be dehydrated, have her drink more water and come back in a week"
My thoughts: 1. Growing pains - Dr. Google says growing pains usually happen at night (wakes kids up) but its fine when they wake up. She has it when she wakes up 2. Auto Immune issue - lupus? arthritis? - doctor said he does not think it is, because she would have more symptoms 3. Sprain/tear/etc - it should be constant pain, it shouldn't go away by mid morning. 4. Something with the muscle - pain does not seem to be on her thigh or hamstring, its in the middle of the back of her knee.
Its gotten worse, the first few days it hurt when she got up but she was able to walk to school normally. Then over the weekend it hurt in the morning but was fine by lunchtime.
Today was worse, she actually had the pain the whole day.
Any guesses?
Thanks

I would ask the dr for an X-ray or CT scan would be better. She could have a tear or cyst pressing on a nerve or something similar. MRI would be best but start with some imaging to get to the bottom of it. Have you given her Advil for the pain?

I agree - also call the doctor back and say the pain has gotten worse.

Any guesses on whats wrong with DD's leg?
I’d take her to an ortho urgent care if she can not walk.

>> She could have a tear or cyst pressing on a nerve or something similar.
But if she had that wouldn't the pain be constant?
>>Have you given her Advil for the pain?
We have not. Its usually gone by the afternoon.
>>I’d take her to an ortho urgent care if she can not walk.
She seems fine - she's playing with DS, but she is standing with her leg bent (weight on the other leg)

I don't want to scare you unnecessarily as this probably isn't it, but that sounds exactly like my symptoms when I had a blood clot behind the knee.
It's unlikely to be that but please get it checked.

Can I ask why you don’t believe the doctor and think it has to be something else?

It hurt in the morning only and then it felt fine? how was the blood clot diagnosed?

dehydration might make your muscles cramp, but its not her muscle thats hurting, its behind the knee. Yes, if the hamstring is cramping it could pull on the ligament behind the knee, but it seems like unlikely. Also, her water intake has not changed recently, so why would it start all of a sudden? plus it has been getting worse the past few days. (its not like she stopped drinking water the past few days)
>>What type of tests did the doctor do?
No tests. He said he is not concerned and thinks its dehydration.

Honestly it sounds like growing pains to me. i used to have these so much growing up and I remember feeling that type of pain in the middle of the night. My mom would rub my legs with a spanish alcohol mixture and by morning I was better. Prayers your DD gets better ASAP

I thought also about growing pains. But I would listen to my instincts and if you feel you want more answers, it would be better to check it again or get a second opinion. Maybe also see if some stretching works. Best of luck and I hope you get answers soon.

Yeah, my first thought was growing pains, but every site I read seems to say that it happens at night and its gone by morning.
Hers seem to happen in the morning and she's good at night.

I don’t think it can hurt to have it checked by an ortho with X-ray or CT just to be a on the safe side. Wouldn’t you want to KNOW it’s just growing pains and not guess?
I said a cyst or growth because my sister has one and it sometimes hurts and sometimes doesn’t based on its movement and proximity to the nerves back there. So that’s what made me think of that

My boys have had this. It's growing pains. Give her a lot of water and give her potassium rich foods like bananas. I would give my kids motrin if it woke them up and that would help

Of course, but my wife brought her to the pediatrician and he's all "I'm not concerned, have her drink more water and see how it goes"
>>My boys have had this. It's growing pains.
But I thought growing pains occur at night and are gone/dont happen in the morning.
