Letter from NYC HS student
This is a great letter from a NYC HS Student on how the public schools are functioning (or not really functioning) during the Covid spike. I feel for these kids!

This generation is going to be really good at reading pregnancy tests. It’s a good life skill to have.
I have no comment on the rest. I’ve given up at this point. The whole situation sucks. I hate having to give those tests to my students (one place I work at is like 13th (yes, that exists here) grade + trade school).
ETA: my students are being taught. The situation isn’t as bad here as described in that school. Still my colleagues and I hate keeping up with giving the tests and the extra paperwork.

Despite what the mayor would like you to believe, the NYC public schools are in shambles right now. I don't care what anyone says- this is not a quality education and at this point, NYC schools are open to babysit and prove a point. I know so many DOE teachers and they say it is a nightmare like they have never seen. No teachers, more than 50% of students absent, parents begging for a remote option because they are terrified to send their kids to school. Kids just sitting there doing nothing- because the custodian is subbing their class.

I feel like my daughter’s middle school in an upper middle class district in Nassau County isn’t much better. She said that her science teacher and Italian teacher have been out for a while. The sub is a teacher who teaches something else, so they’re not receiving instruction at all in those subjects. I feel like the kids have lost 2 years of education.
