Teach me about Pokemon cards please
My son has been asking for Pokemon cards but I dont know anything about them.
Can someone explain what kids do with them. Is it just collecting like baseball cards, or do they play with them like Magic the Gathering.
I just see kids walking around with binders full of cards, I looked at Target and the cards were expensive. The binders must contain many hundreds of dollars worth.
Thanks

It is a trading card game just like magic the gathering. Older cards do have a monetary value. Is there a gaming store in your community that offers Pokémon game nights? That would be a good place to explore the hobby.

Well…it’s 2 sided. Most kids just collect and trade and get to know the characters and the powers at a basic level. The other side is down a tunnel similar to dungeons and dragons. It’s a vast universe that takes a long time to explore. Whenever my son would tell me a character is legendary, my eyes would glaze over. I mean, there are handbooks. Whenever there are multiple handbooks and guides about a game, it’s beyond my understanding.

Lol - we have some handbooks.
My kids basically just collect, trade and discuss with friends. They still enjoy Pokemon (the shows, the video games, Pokemon Go) but the cards are collecting dust lol.
I'd just buy a couple of packs and see where it goes from there.

My son has a few sets and then was gifted sets from my coworker.
He will play the card game with us. There is also a digital card game which he prefers (probably because he can play it alone).
He does not trade with friends but does have a huge binder that he enjoys organizing by type and/or power.
