Woodpecker issues

I have a woodpecker pecking on my roof. Someone else in my neighborhood does as well as when I went outside to find him (which I can't see him) I heard a similar noise in the distance.

Any tips to get rid of him as he woke my kids up this morning. He couldn't do this on a school day lol.

Thanks!

ETA - it's amazing that a small beak can sound like a jackhammer when it wants to!

Re: Woodpecker issues

I used to have cedar shingles on my house, and I had woodpeckers pecking on the side of the house for a couple of years. Mainly right outside of my bedroom, of course!

The "solution" was to replace the siding with vinyl siding.

I have had the same thing for years!! He pecks on the metal on my chimney basket. It's vibrates down the chimney. Lol It's my understanding that they do it to attract mates and to claim their territory. They are beautiful and I know it's a bit annoying, but from my experience, they only do this in the spring, near me anyway. I leave suet out for them and they are so pretty. But the sound is well, alarming..lol. your kids will remember this and laugh about it one day.

Thanks - I had a feeling it was a "mating" call as I heard a similar noise in the distance lol. Maybe he will relocate as this is the first time I've heard it - maybe tomorrow he will bother someone else.

It's not so bad when you are on the main floor, it's just bad in the bedrooms upstairs.

I've seen him around and he is quite beautiful but I'm ready for him to leave lol.

I hear ya! Lol He will most likely bother someone else tomorrow. It only happens a few times on my house each spring, but I hear him across the street, etc...lol

Re: Woodpecker issues

We used scare tape when we had one pecking on our gutter. It worked.

sorry to hear this, I'm sure it's super loud. My answer will be different, by just accepting it, as annoying as it can be. This is natural and use this as a teaching moment. Show your children different pictures of wood peckers and explain why he/she is doing this.

I realize he woke them on a none school day. Which I'm sure sucks for you :(

I have one that keeps pecking holes in my siding. I'm in a townhouse so I don't have to pay to have it repaired. Someone told me to spray the siding for bugs b/c they're pecking holes to look for bugs to eat.

Just check once in a while to make sure they aren't putting holes in the roof. My bird was boring holes in my siding, so I would patch the holes with sheet metal behind the damaged siding shingles.

Thanks - I am more concerned about him making holes in my house as Goldenrod mentioned above as he sounds like a jackhammer.

I re-read and I did write it that way. By the time I responded I was more concerned about damage as it had been around for hours but we caught her in the act - she was on our big metal vent (I thought it was a male that I had seen around a lot recently). Hoping they aren’t back tomorrow lol.

Woodpecker issues

I would think that once the woodpecker realizes he isn't getting any food from attacking your roof it will move on.

We had one in our tree right outside my bedroom. I thought I was was going to go insane. One day he just moved on. Now we have an owl who hoots all night lol.

He's still here lol. He's actually attacking a metal exhaust pipe so that makes me feel a little better as to why it's so loud but it's annoying.
