Don’t laugh-Juneteenth question
So do we wish people a happy Juneteenth? I’m asking in all seriousness. I try to acknowledge people’s holidays and wish them a happy holiday. This one’s new.

Unless they were a freed slave, I would say no.

Don’t laugh-Juneteenth question
This "holiday" is really confusing to me. I understand what it is and I understand the significance but I do not understand why they made it a holiday. A more significant day would have been the day the emancipation proclamation was signed. Juneteeth was really a celebration for Texas that just spread. I do not know anyone, from many different races, who have heard of this celebration prior to a few years ago. So long answer short, I personally don't think you should be wishing anyone anything but it is a day to remember the history and importance of that date.

When the emancipation proclamation was signed it only freed a small number of slaves because it wasn't enforced. The union soldiers had to go to every state to free slaves. They arrived in TX 2 years after the proclamation was signed to free the last of the slaves.

Ok, but curious then why do you think a more significant day would have been the day the emancipation proclamation was signed instead of the day the last of the slaves were freed.

Juneteenth has been celebrated for many years but mostly only locally to Galveston. It's been a holiday in Texas since 1980. Historically speaking it means more to the black community than the day of the Emancipation Proclamation.
There have been a few attempts to make it recognized as a federal holiday and those attempts were given additional steam after the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
It's generally considered a festive day so I believe it's appropriate to say Happy Juneteenth.

Did you say it to people today? Father’s Day probably took more precedence in most people’s lives.

Because I was looking at it as we look at July 4th. A freedom day. We celebrate on July 4th when the declaration of independence was approved by Congress. We do not celebrate the last battle of the revolution.

But it’s different in terms of the historical context and significance. You can’t really compare. The Emancipation proclamation was largely symbolic. And it only freed the slaves in the confederate states anyway.
Anyone who wants more information about this can read Heather Cox Richardson or look into who Opal Lee was - the activist who had championed Juneteenth becoming a holiday.
There were a few fun local celebrations yesterday.

Don’t laugh-Juneteenth question
This is not a white persons holiday. It is for black people to commemorate their freedom from slavery. It is not the same as July 4th or any other holiday. It's not a hard concept to understand that not every holiday is for white people. You can wish black people well on Juneteenth but it isn't for you.

Why did it take this long for them to acknowledge this as a federal holiday?

Then it shouldn't be a federal holiday. Anyone is able to enjoy and celebrate any holiday they wish but that doesn't mean it needs to be a federal holiday especially with your explanation that it only is intended for a minority of the population.

I've never seen white people needing another holiday.
It is abolsutley intended for minorities. I'm sorry you're so behind the times. It's a day for black people to experience their liberation from slavery and what that means to them.
Take your day off and get over yourself.

I think anyone can "celebrate" anything they want if they use common sense. There are/were many public events celebrating the day. Attend one, watch a performance or a parade, or best yet, frequent a black owned business.
Basically follow the lead of the black community and don't co opt the holiday.
FFS it's not difficult.

I understand that and I am pretty well read up on it as well since I am on the DEI committee at school and seen the awareness/activities for students. Many of the education documents for children are calling it a second independence day so I think my reference was valid. I am all for celebrating the end of slavery and even though a previous poster said it is not for white people, it actually is for all people. I just did not agree with the day as this is was primarily a Texas holiday that spread when Texans moved to other parts of the country. I just though a day could have been chosen that really encompassed everyone. But that is just my own opinion which means nothing except in my own head lol.

That has literally nothing to do with what I said.
Most of the celebrations were yesterday for that very reason.
