How early is too early to go to a friend’s house unannounced?

My son is 8. He became friends with another boy who lives in our neighborhood last fall. His friend rides his bike to our house 99% of the time without notice and asks to play at our house. This is a daily occurrence. My son has repeatedly asked him to call/text before coming over. (My son always calls first because honestly this is the polite and respectful thing to do).

Today the kids have off for the holiday. The friend is ringing our door at 9:30 am. Like, what?!?!? I was just eating my breakfast and my son is watching TV in his underwear.

Would you let your child go unannounced to someone’s house that early in the morning?

I wouldn't let my kid go to someone's house unannounced at any time.
But yeah at 930 I wouldn't even be answering the door. Nope. I don't have the patience for that whatsoever

My son would go to see if our neighbor was around closer to 11 unless our neighbor invited him earlier via Xbox.

We have the opposite now, last night my doorbell rang at 9:30pm asking for my son to play manhunt. I was shot because it was a long day and I have a broken wrist so I tire easily.

I think it's great kids are out and ready to play at 9:30 Am and not opting to sit on the phone or video games. I'm sure I'll be in the minority

This.

When we were kids there was no announcing. The announcement was the doorbell ringing lol but I guess with how times are changing, the kid should text first. Especially if your son asked him to do so.

But I don’t think 9:30am is too early for kids off from School to play. I remember barely brushing my teeth and running out to play as soon as my eyes opened.

I know that is what we used to do back in the day, but 9:30 am seems too early.
I think a text as a heads up would be nice.
Can you text or call the mom and let her know?

I guess it all depends on when the kids usually get together as one set of kids might be early birds and get together in the morning while others not until around lunch.

We have a few good friends that live within eyesight of my house. The kids do ring the doorbell unannounced and have pretty much their whole lives - they are 14 now. But it is to ask to come out and play. Not to invite themselves over. I actually love it 99% of the time because it's old school like how I grew up but when it does happen a little too early on a weekend morning it's annoying. I think that the only way to stop it is to text the mom and let her know you'd prefer a heads up or to repeatedly turn him away for a while.

No I would make my child ask before they went over, but I guess his parents don't care.

I guess the real issue is that I feel like a free babysitter for the friend EVERYDAY I am off. If he rings my doorbell at 9:30 am, he’s at my house until 5/6 pm. I become the cook, referee, and daily activity coordinator. If I let the boys decide, they’d play video games or watch YouTube all day. My son usually wants to do outside things, but his friend needs some coaxing.

And yes growing up I had another family that lived across the street from me and we’d always hang out at each other’s houses. I called before going over to see if they could play. I don’t think a call/text is too much to ask for.

I am going to discuss with his mom or dad the next time I see them.

Oh no, then that does not fly with me either. If they are getting together and going to ride bikes and meet friends, ok. For you to have to take care of this kid all day is not right.

Same. Also 9:30 is too early. 10 am would be okay. When my kids were younger kids would come over at 10 unannounced.

I see, I just re-read your post and maybe I shouldn't have given my two cents since I don't have kids.

Setting a boundary is perfectly okay. If coming at 9:30 is too early or if you prefer a call first then let his parents know. Perhaps even the night before, decide if the kids will play and what time the play date can be.

HI

I have no problem with the unannounced as i think kids living near each other is a great way to play.
930 is a bit early unless he saw you out on the lawn.

I would just say he is eating breakfast he will come by or text you when he is ready to play.

Regarding him hanging out all day you need to set boundaries yourself. If you have had enough send him home :)

We’re up early in my house, so I wouldn’t think 9:30 is too early for the kids to go out and play. But there’s a difference between going out to play and you babysitting the child all day. Does your son ever go to their house?

Yeah if that were the case I would say "he will be out in a half an hour. Maybe you can have a catch or ride bikes together." I would avoid inviting him into the house. We have a situation in which one of my daughters friends texts me every day asking to come over. It's just as bad - the text does not make it any better, but the mom knows it and she WANTS it because then I am watching her kid every day, feeding her dinner, doing activities with her etc. So talking to the parents in this situation probably won't help. Seriously, do not let him in your house and start texting the mom that you are sending them to his house for lunch etc. His parents are walking all over you and I only know this because I too allow myself to be walked all over. It makes me somewhat sick - people make excuses for their own laziness by thinking that you actually enjoy or want them at your house all the time when that is extremely rarely the case.

I love when kids knock on the door looking for my kids...it's how we did it when I was a kid. I'd say 9:30 or 10am is ok with me since we're up early. My kids are too shy to go anywhere unannounced, but I'd tell them 10am is good if they asked.

We had 1 boy knock a little after 8am 2 weeks ago! His grandmother, whom I've never met, told him to ask my 12 year old son to take him to Dollar Tree to get something. The store is 2 miles away and he'd have to go on 2 busy roads (including Sunrise Hwy.) to get him there. We don't let him go there, but she wanted him to chaperone her 10 year old grandson along the way. NOPE. I told him no & to come back around 10am if he wanted to play with my kids. I couldn't believe the nerve though.

That is so weird! She's basically asking your kid to run an errand for her!

I hate that. I never go to anyones house without calling or texting first and I ask the same of my friends and family. My house does not have a revolving door. I don't even answer the door for any solicitors. If i don't know your coming, i don't answer. You can talk to the ring camera.

I would have him tell his friend that his parents would like that he text him first and not show up unannounced.

I’d never let my kid go anywhere unannounced without it being confirmed via text.

I personally don't have a problem with it because my kids would be content to sit on their ipads but for the neighborhood kids coming knocking. However, I don't feel like a babysitter either. I would not like that one bit.
