Health Insurance
Self employed and pay for your own health insurance? Be prepared …
We just received a letter from ours updating us on the new pricing for 2023. It’s going up $550 per month.
This is pure insanity. It mentioned 3 things as reasons for the Increase and the one that stuck out the most was Impact Of Covid 19 Crisis.
I have no words

We have insurance through my husbands employer and got a notice two days ago that the rates will be increasing 16%. I'm hoping his company finds a new plan and does not renew.

Our increase is 31% So that makes sense they are saying you’re half would be 16
It’s a nightmare. Not many options out there tbh. My current plan has been the “most affordable” for years now. Hundreds below the others. I could only image what those plans are at now

Not trying to be a jerk here, and correct me if I am understanding this wrong...but your percentage increase seems to be double of what most people are getting. Like shouldn't your percentage be about 16%- and since you are paying double for 2 people, your increase should still be 16% -just double the amount of actual money. (Single person at $1000 increase is $160) Couple paying $2000 increase is $320- double the single person's but still 16 %. If you are getting a 31% increase you will pay $620 more. I am bringing it up, because if your increase is actually 31% and most people's are 16% increase, it might be time to shop for different insurance.

Through the PP employer it was a 16% increase on their end. So if employer splits insurance payments with their employee - it would make sense that theirs went up 16%. Because we pay privately (own our own business) and it’s gone up 31%. No employer to split rise in price.
We shop insurance every year. And every year the current plan we have has always been 400 or so less per month. I’m afraid to even see what those plans are if this one jumped so high after years of small price increases. We will obviously check with our insurance guy to see what he says is happening. But it’s not looking good

Wow that is totally disgusting. One of the main reasons I can’t ever leave my job is because the health insurance is so cheap, forget that the job at times make you suicidal because surely they won’t cover that…

No, that is not how the math should work. If you are paying 1000 for health insurance and it goes up 31% you are now paying 1310. If your company is paying half and you are paying half and it goes up a total of 31% then you are paying 655 and your employer is paying 655. A 155 increase in the original 500 is still 31%. You don’t split a % increase. You split the dollar increase but the % increase is the same on both sides of the equation.
If your payment went up 550 a month that means you are now paying over $2k per month for two people with no children. That does seem on the high side but I haven’t had to shop for insurance in years.

I didn’t do the exact math and I don’t know how every employers coverage work (I haven’t had company paid insurance in over 2 decades) I just guesstimated on the fly that it could make sense
Yes, we pay just under $1800 now and it will be over $2300 as of 2023. For 2 people, no kids, no ded and decent copays. But it’s not accepted everywhere - I have a smaller network of drs.
We will be looking (as we do every year) to compare plans and pricing, but as I stated before, the other plans (UHC, BCBS, etc) were always at least $400 more than what we pay currently and they had deductibles , higher copays, etc. so I’m not confident we’re going to find something better.

Wow
I just looked to see how much we pay. For 4 people, our medical, dental and eye care is $211/month with my company.
