Anxiety meds
After a good run of ~15 years, my anxiety and panic attacks have come back to the point where I’ve had multiple panic attacks a day over the past several days. The attacks spike my blood pressure (VERY high), which turns into a vicious cycle of anxiety, thinking I’ll have a stroke and then more anxiety over potentially having a stroke. It’s fun.
I took an SSRI when I was much younger and the first one I tried made me feel very sick and almost manic. Since physical signs seem to send me spiraling, I’m hesitant to try meds again. But at the same time, I’m a total basket case and can’t go on like this.
Can anyone share any good experience with taking meds for anxiety?

Re: Anxiety meds
I also had similar symptoms (manic) when I took Effexor (SSNRI). I took it at two points in my life and the first time was fine. The second time was a complete nightmare and I wound up in the ER because of it. I went off it at that point, but coming off of it was also a nightmare. I had only been on it for three months at that point, but it takes a long time to wean off of it and my doctor only said 2 weeks, which was too short and I used another method. I still had problems months later.
So for me Effexor was not good. The only good thing was the extreme weight loss I had. Apparently I was “lucky” and got the anorexia side effect.
I now take Opipramol, but I am not sure if that is available there. I have been very happy with it, but it still isn’t perfect. I still have anxiety, but it isn’t horrible now. I am going to come off of it soon.

Ok so similar situation and was about to get on meds again when I realized a few things I could try first.
Peri menopause has been a nightmare for me. The hormonal fluctuations are intense. Couple that with some serious tachycardia since having covid and it was like I was a teenager again with severe panic attacks and a heart rate that landed me in the ER (followed by a ton of testing at cardiologist)
I have stopped caffeine, I take magnesium daily and I pay more attention to my body. My anxiety creeps in when I’m about to ovulate and when I’m about to get my period and when it ends! (which can be whenever these days) before stopping caffeine and taking the magnesium it was all the time - daily. Now it’s “just” those times. I keep Xanax on hand for when breathing through it just won’t work.
I still have my dr on standby ready to prescribe me meds if what I’m doing stops working. We discussed a few popular ones. Effexor was on the table but so many people told me not to try it bc they had bad side effects. I just remember the side effects I had from the SSRI i used to take (paxil) and I’m not ready to deal with that again (weight gain, feeling blank, sexual disfunction, etc)

Anxiety meds
I've been on CeleXa for almost 2 years and I don't know if it's doing anything. It's not a negative, but I still have a lot of anxiety. My boyfriend LOVES Lexapro and a friend of mine likes it also. A downside is that it can make it more challenging to have an orgasm.

I was on Celexa briefly in my 20s and it was a complete nightmare for me. Made me completely crazy. I have read a lot of horror stories about Celexa since then. I would never go on any type of anxiety or depression medication after that experience. I have taken xanax twice in my life, it's just not for me. I find that if I exercise and avoid alcohol I experience very little anxiety/depression but I also think that I am just not that prone to anxiety or depression which is odd since my mother suffers greatly with both.

Funny you mention this, i just bought Delta 8 gummies. Haven't tried it yet. It's legal to ship to most states unlike Delta 9 and other THC. I'm hoping it helps. Right around my period I go literally insane and my anxiety is sky high. I always used CBD but realize I need something stronger.

When my anxiety is high, this makes it worse. Every other day? Great sleep aid and wonderful on my migraines.
I came back here to say I woke with the worst anxiety today. You name it, I feel it. Checked calendar, it’s the beginning of ovulation week. So I’ll be partaking in a 1/2 Xanax when I get home from work (if it hasn’t resolved on its own by then)

I wake up with anxiety for no reason from the second I open my eyes when I ovulate and for a week before my period. It's horrible

Anxiety meds
Thank you all for the responses. My doctor gave me propranolol and Ativan. I haven’t taken the Ativan and the propranolol was making it worse so I didn’t take it today. It made me feel very faint, which set my panic off worse.
Speaking of hormones, I’m on the pill and (sorry for the TMI) got my period today on the active pills, which never happens so I’m suspecting there is some hormonal link here.

I’m so sorry. I hope it’s resolved and you have a nice, relaxing night ahead of you!
