Wake up time for people 65+
My ILs are visiting us. My MIL has always been a very early riser (4-5 am), but my FIL would usually sleep until 7:30/8. Today, they were up for the day at 3/3:30. My MIL said it’s what happens when you get old. I don’t know though. My parents are the same age (mid to late 60s) and never wake up at that time. My mom would sleep until noon every day and my dad sets an alarm at 5:30 to go to the gym in the morning so he can complain all day about how tired he is, while bragging that he went to the gym early. My ILs go to bed sometime between 9:30 and 11.

Re: Wake up time for people 65+
My mom is almost 78 and she goes to bed around 11 and gets up about 7am.
Are they active as maybe they are just not tired? My mom bowls and goes to the gym multiple times a week and is always moving.

Re: Wake up time for people 65+
My FIL wakes up around 3:30 in the morning. He falls asleep for the night by 8:30. He also says it’s bc he’s old (he’s 68). It freaked me once bc I didn’t realize this & one night we stayed over & I heard so much noise at that hour I thought someone was breaking into the house but no, it was just him getting up for the day.

My parents are in their 70s and my dad is up around 530 or 6. 3 AM sounds a bit crazy. What time are they going to bed??

They are both active. My MIL walks daily, crafts, and does extensive gardening. My FIL cycles 20 miles a few times a week. I believe he also lifts weights.

Sounds like too much sleep during the day and going to bed early.

Re: Wake up time for people 65+
I have heard that when you are elderly you require less and less sleep - only about 6- 7 hours would be good enough. I find it so odd because my inlaws sleep really late and I don't think they stay up excessively late. Every other old person I know is up by 7 or 8 the latest.

Yes:
Sleep Changes in Older Adults. Most healthy older adults aged 65 or older need 7-8 hours of sleep each night to feel rested and alert. But as you age, your sleep patterns may change. These changes can cause insomnia, or trouble sleeping.
I can’t imagine getting up at 3am though and would push my bedtime later so I would have a normal wake up time.

Wake up time for people 65+
My parents sleep late—until 9/10am which I think is late for people in their 70’s. My mom wakes for the bathroom around 3am and has trouble falling back asleep often. But she always just stays in bed and reads or puts on soft music. Eventually she dozes off again.

Wake up time for people 65+
Today they woke up at a “normal” time so I think yesterday was a fluke. My MIL has never been a good sleeper. She’s always the first one up. I am typically an early riser (5:30-6:30 am) and I don’t think I’ve ever woken up before her.
The thing I find weird is they go to bed late. Like I stated above though, my MIL dozes off here and there. Like at 8:45, she was sleeping - like passed out - on the couch for 15 minutes and then when I went to bed at 9:45, she was up crocheting and stayed up. I think she would feel more well rested if she went to bed when she was falling sleep on the couch. Falling alseep on the couch is obviously a pet peeve of mine. Lol

Yes I think the cap naps ruin the nighttime sleep.

Wake up time for people 65+
My mom is going to be 82. She goes to bed at 11pm/12am and sleeps till 10am. She is not an early riser and hates when her neighbors wake her up early.

Wake up time for people 65+
My dad wakes up around 4, but he's always done that. He had to get up early for work, and always napped after work. He just kept doing the same after he retired.

Wake up time for people 65+
This thread reminded me of my parents. The other weekend, my daughter and niece slept over there. My dad comes out in his robe and says "Good night!" It wasn't even 7 PM! Sitll broad daylight!
To be fair, he said he wasn't feeling well, so that's why he was going to bed so early, but his normal bedtime is 9 PM. He probably wakes up around 5 AM. He's 83.

Re: Wake up time for people 65+
My mom is 80 and she goes to bed at around 10:30 or 11:00 and wakes up at 7:00 am. But then after her PT she naps for about one hour before lunch.

Re: Wake up time for people 65+
Really depends on the person. My father in law and his wife sleep in and get their day started late (both retired). My MIL wakes up at 430-5am even when she's not working. My dad wakes up around 730-8 and my mom can sleep in till like 1030 if you let her.

Wake up time for people 65+
My mom goes to sleep at varying hours, usually around 10-11 pm . She will get up reluctantly if she has to but will sleep in past 9:00am if she doesn't have to get up.
