For me, it's not really new. People started working from home in the company I used to work for when they started having babies--and 1 of those babies is a senior in HS.
It was always an issue because it was only offered to people w/ kids, but a few years before the pandemic I started 1 day a week. (parents had 2-4)
Most of them had help, but it was helpful for them to not have to commute. Most of them stopped work early & picked back up at night.
My DH is home all the time now (he can go in if he wants) but we are saving so much money on his commute.
I am looking for a job, but I can't go back to 3 hour round trip commutes & 10 hour in-office work days, plus late night & weekend WFH.
I've had the option to work from home ..here and there as needed...since 2004 ish. Recent I was working from home most Fridays because it became my habit and was a nice break. I probably could have gotten away with more. The nature of my job definitely allowed it and my boss really didn't care as long as I came in when he came to my office so we could work together.
I just had no idea when I took this job that it would become 100% remote forever.
I honestly didn't sign up for that. I've thought of looking for something else, especially in times where my depression and isolation are particularly bad....but I have a really good situation in every single other way so I just suck it up
I think that for me, I was a SAHM before going back to work so I made a lot of mom friends in my area. So I can still meet up with people for a walk or for lunch. If I didn't have that I would definitely want to be in a situation where I am around people a couple times a week. Working from home can be isolating.

I do try to meet my coworkers who are local for lunch at least once a week. We sometimes bring our laptops and work at a restaurant and make it a working afternoon.

I don't think it's really about the childcare issue because you can't really be productive when you are trying to take care of a young child and work at the same time. It's about being able to take a NY job with a NY salary and relocate to somewhere a lot less expensive, or have the ability to travel and work from anywhere in the world.
Personally I am not sure why any company would want positions that can maintain productivity while being fully remote to have to come into the office. Rent is one of the largest company expenses outside of compensation. If you can have more people WFH on a full time basis it's much better for your bottom line.
My company wants the culture of being together and working together. They do many things for the employees during work hours so it is just more than work.
I guess it depends on the job but I think this is really important in order to have a cohesive team. With so many more positions being fully remote, companies need to rework their vision for company culture and that’s a hard thing to do.
My last job was fully remote and I never met anyone I worked with- and I had to work very closely with these people. I found it very hard to gauge their individual work styles (or personalities for that matter) and it definitely made my job harder.

Right now, all 4 people who report to me, I have never met. Not once.
It definitely is so much harder to manage a team this way

I can see that. At least in person you see how they work and their weaknesses and strengths and overall personality.

I would not even want to. I found it to be awful during the covid and prefer the human connection i get at the office

Most of my friends are WFH and they get everything done during the week, more time w kids, pets, spouse, etc. My industry is pulling people back into offices and I want full time remote. Seems near impossible but I’m willing to wait it out. It’s shocking how many recruiters are reaching out bc they can’t fill these positions but the larger firms want people in office. I have no interest in commuting just to spend half my day training people while not getting my own work done. Hence the reason the companies want people back in, to train everyone up
