Zoom etiquette?
If you are in a Zoom meeting with someone and they don't turn their camera on, should you turn yours off as well? I meet with a lot of college aged students as part of my job, and I am finding on zoom calls many are keeping their cameras off. What is the etiquette in this case? I have been leaving my camera on but do I turn mine off as well? Or ask them to turn theirs on? (though I don't want to make them feel uncomfortable).

I don’t think you need to turn your camera off but they should turn their camera on. If you’re in a huge meeting or a webinar or something like that I get keeping your camera off, but for a 1:1 or small group meeting I find it rude to have the camera off if the person running the meeting has their camera on.
It might be helpful for you (or whoever sends the meeting invite) to put in a line saying that it’s highly encouraged to have the camera on so they’re prepared.

I agree! That's so rude. I feel like all business etiquette has gone out the window since Covid. It's crazy. Although I do appreciate the more casual attire.

There are 10 of us in my department and when we have meetings , some have cameras on, some are off. We are a very laid back dept and no one really cares if cameras are on or off. And more than have these meetings we have fall under the category of “ this meeting could’ve been an email”

I agree. I dont turn my camera on if its just a reg phone call (because the camera is on my laptop which I typically have closed when its hooked up to my work station) but I turn it on for scheduled calls.

Zoom etiquette?
We've just had a culture in my office that everyone always has cameras on unless it's a really large meeting and you're mostly listening. It feels weird to me when someone has their camera off but they're still talking and participating.
I was in a meeting the other day when someone didn't want to have her camera on b/c her house was messy. Um.... blur your background!

The majority of us never have our camera's on and no one has a issue with it. The bosses usually do and a few girls who always have their hair and makeup done lol.

My direct team doesnt turn their cameras on but we spend a ton of time on zoom daily......for our dept meetings with the senior mgmt we put our cameras on. I think some of it is also generational. The younger employees are more likely to not have them on. If I join a meeting and the other person has theirs on, I put mine on.

I don't ever turn my camera on. I actually went in and disabled mine in settings so it never accidentally turns on God forbid.
If others have theirs on I don't care and won't tell them to turn it off, but I will lower the lid of my laptop so I don't see them. I find it creepy to see people on camera while I am talking to them and it distracts me. I end up looking at their house, their background art work, plants, their hair, shirt etc and I can't focus on the conversation.
I'm also not wasting good expensive makeup to sit in my house and work and I'm not fit for human consumption without make up so no way would i ever turn a camera on. I would hope peoplewouldbe more interested in my brains and what I contribute to a meeting than my looks.

I use to hate being on zoom and never turned my camera on because we didnt have to. However, my new company cameras are on and I see its better. And I'm okay with it now
I think it inappropriate and unprofessional for one to be off while others are on.
Each should be able to see each other, and college or high school 100% should have the camera on.
IMO you should ask all camera be on

I also meet with a lot of clients (18 y/o and up) through Zoom. I always have my camera on. If the client doesn’t have theirs on, I ask them to put it on. Sometimes they give me excuses like “it’s not working, etc…), so I let it go. But I tell them I need to see their face the next time we meet.

Nah we are all in our 40’s and 50’s and don’t have them on.

All of this! I never turn my camera on. But, most of the virtual meetings I have are school related, or for my son's special needs program. I'm scary without makeup and I hate putting makeup on if I'm sitting home

If I’m in a small meeting, I put on my camera. I think it is weird to not turn on your camera for a one on one meeting. At that point, just do a regular phone call.

We use Webex meetings(which is pretty much zoom, just more expensive and professional)rather than phone calls because often we have to share our screens...reports, spreadsheets, etc.

Agreed. Who cares what they look like as most people I know work their best when they are dressed their worst lol

Exactly as what is the difference before covid when everything was done over the phone?

Thanks all, I am thinking maybe its a generational thing? They are around 17/18- 21... I think its okay in group settings to leave off camera but these are 1:1 meetings. I would do a phone call, but its easier for me to Zoom since I have to screen share.
OH and one time I had "Big D*** MF" enter the waiting room, so one of these kids didn't even change their name on the zoom.... I was like OMG lol... I can't...

I still don't think it's bad for them to leave the camera off. I am in plenty of meetings that use screen share and many still leave cameras off. I am also client serving, so if one of my clients requests me to be on camera, of course I would oblige. But the PP who said they ask clients to turn their camera on... I think that's inappropriate. If they are the client and they don't want to be seen that's their perogotive.

We use teams so even regular phone calls are done through our computers and can be video calls.
