Lease or buy? And Audi opinions

So I need to get a new car. For the last 6 years I have had a reliable 20 year old car. My inspection is coming up and I already know I need a new set of tires. I know my car won’t pass inspection and I gather it will cost me 1000+ to fix things to get it to pass. There is also rust starting…

So I went car shopping this afternoon after work. I found a great deal for an Audi A1 to lease (375 with insurance). I haven’t leased in a while. I have really enjoyed having no car payment. But the reality is that I need a new car and I do not not want to put money into my old car, even though it is a really great car.

So if you have an Audi, do you like it? I’ve never had one. I’m usually a VW person, and I have had a BMW once. My current car is a Peugeot.

And if you are totally against leasing, could you tell me why?

We have leased and owned.

Leasing is great if you want a new car every few years. I felt it stressful as when our lease was up, we needed to find something ASAP and decided that Certified Preowned was better for us as we dont need a car every 3 years. So it was a little stressful for us.

We bought an A4 for our son and we’ve been happy with it.

Audi and VW are the same parent company so if you like the way a VW drives, the audi's drive similarly. I loved all of my audi's and vw's.

As far as leasing, we don't lease because we always ended up buying the car at the end of the lease. Now I just like owning the car. But so many people I know do lease and really like it. They like being able to get a new car every 3-4 years.

I lease because I love having a new car every 3 years and barely put any money into it. Never had an Audi but one of my kids does and haven't heard any complaints.

Leasing will never save money in the long run. Unless you have a business (write off) or unless it really matters if you have a new car every few years buying is usually the better option. We have owned my Audi since 2015 and have never had any major issue with it. Good luck.

I think that the best thing to do is to buy a certified preowned car from a dealer, economically speaking.

This was the case pre-supply chain/covid issues. With the decrease in inventory, often pre-owned are not any cheaper than brand new so it makes sense to look at both, including interest rates when financing.

A friend of mine just purchased the Audi e-tron. She is a PhD and researches everything to death so I would trust that it's an excellent vehicle/brand. Good luck!

Yes, that was definitely the case in the past couple years but I heard that the supply chain issues for cars have begun to work themselves out. still worth researching though.

They do cars a little different here and don’t have as much as a stock as they do there. Usually people get their cars made to order. I need a car in about 3 weeks’ time and they have one in stock with most of what I want. To get one made to order takes 8 months at the moment. Luckily, I don’t need much, so I was able to find one.

They don’t do things like finding a dealer in another state; you have to do that on your own. I don’t have much time and all the Easter holidays are coming up this month.

I’m still debating buying it new or leasing. Pre-owned isn’t an option because of my time line.

So with that info would you buy new or lease?

I think if you are ok with always having a car payment and want a new car every few years, then leasing is the way to go.
I always bought my cars.

I currently have an Audi Q5, it is a 2012, and LOVE it.
Not cheap when work needs to get done, but nothing like the craftsmanship of a German car.

I would go to the dealer and compare the payments and then decide. If they have 0% financing for 5 years I would probably take that and buy the car, personally. But for me it would be a numbers game analyzing the purchase price vs. the lease price and buyout option at the end of the lease.
