Shocked by Presidential Outcome
For months I swore she would win. I was actually shocked last night until it really showed that people just have had it with the current administration.
She did not exceed Biden in any of the states and Trump got higher numbers in states than he did in 2016 and 2020.

I thought she would win too.
I was not impressed with either choice but I feel that people were unhappy and wanted a change. They likely were better off during Trump's reign.

Shocked by Presidential Outcome
It's a bad time to be a woman, at least one of childbearing age, in America. And that's sad.
Other things that are concerning me about 4 years of a Trump Presidency:
-Project 2025 (and yes, he knows what that is.)
- Book banning and its effect on libraries and librarians
-Dismantling the Department of Education
-RFK, Jr. in the Department of Health (Come on, really)
-Mass deporatation and breaking up families.
-Withdrawing support for Ukraine
The only proposal I like is strengthing our borders. I'm not sure a wall is going to help as we've seen that it can be breached but something needs to make our nation more secure.

Shocked by Presidential Outcome
^^I am devasted by this election and I echo all of these concerns plus a few others including the draining of Social Security.
And while I do have concerns about the borders, I do not think mass deportation or a wall is the answer. I think there needs to be some process in place to allow people to become legal citizens within a certain time frame. I am concerned about who is going to fund all this deportation.
Obviously I am also gutted about womens rights and the possibility of a national abortion ban. We will end up going back to back alley abortions and that is scary. I have a 24 year old daughter and to think that she may not get the care she needs if her pregnancy was at risk is so sickening.

Shocked by Presidential Outcome
Could someone help me with this - a friend of mine asked this question..... In reflecting on the results of elections, something really puzzles me...
Vote totals for the two major candidates so far are 67M for Ms. Harris and 72M for Mr. Trump. I don't suspect that those totals will change significantly.
What puzzles me is that in 2020 Mr. Biden received 81M votes and Mr. Trump received a total of 74M. So Trump's total votes in the two elections is somewhat consistent. My question is what has happened to the 14M votes from 2020? I find it very difficult to believe that our collective voting rolls shrunk by 14 million voters, nor can I believe that many, for what ever reason, failed to vote.
But were our voting rolls actually that large in 2020? I'm not a conspiracy nut, but I just wonder - What happened to those voters? Did we lose 14M people to Covid? Or were the vote count rumors of Detroit and Philadelphia more than just rumors? (BTW - Detroit had a voting population of about 100K in 2020, but a total of 300K votes were cast.)
I could be completely off base here, but I find the circumstances rather puzzling.

Re: Shocked by Presidential Outcome
A lot of these "fears" are pushed by TT and other online sites and will never come true.
We were all ok during his first 4 years so not sure why people feel this way and our current administration is a mess. Not sure why anyone would think she could change it while she was there for 4 years and we barely even saw her or heard her trying to make a change.

The only one that I have heard him say he will do is mass deportation of illegal immigrants.

Re: Shocked by Presidential Outcome
My mistake: RFK, Jr. is being considered for head of the FDA not Secretary of HHS as it is believed getting him confirmed would be too difficult but having him in that position isn't fantastic either.
Project 2025 is basically a blueprint for Trump's administation that he has disawoved but some principles have been a part of his Agenda47, including downsizing or eliminating the Department of Education.
While he wants to put education in control of the states, he wants to enact legislation to restrict content discussed or taught in school, bring prayer to public schools and dismantle diversity initiatives.

So basically nothing set in stone that he said he truly wants to do. Just things people have heard through the grapevine and pushed along.
This is the problem I think with both Trump and Kamala. People listen to things on social media, particularly TT and run with it.

Yes, these are all things he said he will do. https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-wins-second-term-policies-de3dcf0f173b42602b258042fd7aaafb
If you don’t like the AP all you have to do is google “what will trump do” and you’ll find a dozen articles, from all political persuasions saying the same thing. I don’t know how anyone, on either side, could have trouble finding this information. It’s literally everywhere.

I don't get my news from social media or TikTok.
All you have to do is listen to what he says at his rallies, his conferences, and his interviews and it is all there, straight from his mouth. His campaign/press secretary then has the job of claiming "Oh no, he didn't mean it that way."
“I say it all the time, I’m dying to get back to do this. We will ultimately eliminate the federal Education Department,” Trump said at a Wisconsin rally this year. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/20/politics/department-of-education-shut-down-trump/index.html
What his followers should have done is "researched" do their "research" what a Tariff really is and how it affects consumers. Most believe the country upon whom the tariff is imposed upon PAYS the tariff. The tax is paid by the importer who then passes that cost onto who??? The consumer!
RFK jr. and the FDA Trump promised RFK a place within his administration for endorsing (withdrawing from the race) him for President.

Yes! He’s like Goebbels at this point. It seems like Musk is quite unhinged.
That being said, I’m sure they will have a falling out some time in the future.

Re: Shocked by Presidential Outcome
I think people are shocked because they thought the only thing that mattered was abortion. Which is funny because neither candidate can do anything about abortion.
My concerns were preserving free speech and not allowing the censorship that Kamala promised. I also wanted to halt the escalation of all these wars that came about these last few years because I have a son who is of age to be drafted if necessary.

Re: Shocked by Presidential Outcome
I honestly am surprised that anyone is shocked. Kamala was an unpopular choice (to say the least) in the 2020 primaries. When Biden picked her to be VP, he picked her because she checked his "woman of color" boxes. She honestly did nothing during the last 4 years to change anyone's opinion of her.
The country was tired and needed a change. When over 70% of the country was saying they weren't happy with the way things were going, it seems like the democrats weren't willing to change their message to the American people. She did not do enough to distinguish herself from Biden's policies.
Abortion is an important issue but people's perception of the economy, border security and foreign policy is a lot more important to a larger number of people.
All of that being said, am I happy that it's Trump - no. But am I happy that there might be a change to the last 4 years - yes.
Just because I don't like him doesn't mean that I like her or think she was qualified for the job.

Re: Shocked by Presidential Outcome
I was not surprised by her loss but I was surprised by how much she lost (every single swing state went red, Democrats lost the Senate and the House).
I am very concerned about the fact that Republicans want to end tenure for teachers and gut public schools. It is difficult to recruit teachers now where I live and this isn't going to make it any better. Per their platform "We will support ending Teacher Tenure, adopting Merit pay, and allowing various publicly supported Educational models." Link to their detailed plan below. This is on page 13.

I think that they only people that support tenure for teachers are teachers. Tenure is the most ridiculous concept in the education system. I would be thrilled if it was eliminated.

I agree. My kids have had some great teachers over the years (both tenured and tenure track) but they’ve also had some horrible tenured ones. My son came home this year and told me his science teacher is over it and you can tell she doesn’t want to teach anymore and is just waiting for her pension… this is in high school and this is ridiculous that a clueless high school boy notices it.
