Spinoff to wedding present - What if...

you are going to the wedding alone, it's in CT (a buffet) and they only gave you $50 for a gift?

Re: Spinoff to wedding present - What if...

Actually, I was thinking of giving more...I have no idea how much though...Maybe $100.
I think I would feel really cheesy giving $50 as a gift.

Re: Spinoff to wedding present - What if...

I would give $100-$150
I try not to bade my gift on the location or time of the event, but rather, how much I can afford and how close I am to the people

I would give what I could afford. What is your relation to them? what would you normally give someone that you have the same relationship with as a wedding gift?

Re: Spinoff to wedding present - What if...

We usually give the same that we got, unless we know that it is someone who gave us less because they don't have it, we will give more anyway.

Or if someone that is loaded gave us more than we could afford.

I think $100 is fine especially if you are uncomfortable giving $50.

Well, I want to thank everyone for their help. I ended up giving $100 cuz I just couldn't go lower, I felt really cheapChat Icon ...
and BTW it was $50 from the couple and they both came, but I sort of think they really didn't have the dough and they are from CT.(DH's family) so I don't think they give the same kind of $$$.
Thank you all again for your help!!

Chat Icon Chat Icon You too. My cousin and his wife sent us two wine glasses (equivalent $50) a couple of weeks before the wedding. I thought, ok, they must be giving us a check day of as well... ummmmm... no!! And my wedding was at the Watermill as well.

Seriously, I think I'd give $50 back.

What does being from CT make them cheap? I have lived in CT for the last 5 years. Weddings are not the same up here, but they are VERY similiar. Long Island is out of control with weddings, I say that after my villa lombardi's out of control wedding last yearChat Icon

Maybe they didn't have money to give. WEre they older, on a fixed income, or my DH's BOSS? Yes, he drove all the way from CT for our afternoon wedding with his wife and gave us $50 bucks..Chat Icon Chat Icon

I always gauge no matter where the wedding is, how much they gave us, What matters is my financial situation at the time and how close I am to the couple.

No, don't get me wrong. I don't think being from CT makes them cheap...They just don't do weddings like we do(nobody does). I think $50 is probably appropriate to them. I say this only cuz most of DH's family lives up there and they all gave gifts in that same price range.
A lot of them gave gifts instead of $$$, which I also think is more customary in other places.

Re: Spinoff to wedding present - What if...

I think $50 is fine. I'm finding that people out of NY just don't give nearly as much as people in NY. It's just not common practice. When I started going to friends weddings in VA last year, I was going to give $75-$100 (going alone) but was told by several people that it was rediculous to give that much, so I gave $40-$50.

When Kev and I went to a friend's wedding this past June, we gave the equivalent of $100 in gifts and $$, and I know that's wayyy more than what other friends gave.

It's just completely different expectations.

Give what you feel comfortable with, but it doesn't need to be what you would give for a NY wedding.
