Satchmo's really sick, anything going around
I'm wondering if anyone has heard of any canine illnesses going around in the East Northport or Riverhead area. My 2 year old Pointer came down with what looked like a case of kennel cough shortly after we boarded him out in a Riverhead kennel in late August. We live in E. Northport, but took him out there b/c my in-laws live out there and all the kennels near us were full.
Well, Sunday night he started to re-lapse and when I took him to the vet on Tuesday morning he had a fever of 105 degrees. His chest x-ray came back negative for pneumonia and all his blood work came back normal (they also tested for Lyme's and heartworms -- all normal). So he's been on really intense anitbiotics for the past few days. His fever is down, but I can't get him to eat and he is really lethargice and listless so DH took him to the vet again this morning.
I'm just at a loss as to how he could be so sick. He's young and healthy. He's up to date on all his vaccinations. I was researching on the internet and came across Canine Influenza and all the symptoms fit his condition -- but this is so rare and usually happens during outbreaks and I haven't heard of any outbreaks. So I'm wondering if anyone has heard of anything going around???

for Stachmo. I haven't heard of anything going around. My dogs had kennel cough a few weeks ago after going to the groomer but what Stachmo has sounds much more intense. Poor baby, hoping for a full, quick recovery

Thanks ladies. According to DH it went pretty well at the vet's the morning. They did another chest x-ray (normal) and more blood work -- normal, but he is becoming anemic from not eating. They IV'd him with a bag of fluids and told us we have to start force feeding him if he won't eat. Personally, I think he is getting over the infection, but this high powered anitbiotic is kicking his butt and making him not want to eat. Normally, I'm not a fan of anitbiotics, but he obviously needs them now, so we'll try to do our best. We're taking him out again tomorrow for another IV.
The vet also thought it might be Canine Influenza -- all the symptoms point to it -- but it's highly contagious and, since there have been no reported outbreaks, it's unlikely he has it. He took a blood sample and is sending it up to Cornell to be analyzed anyway. Thanks for the . This has been so hard on all of us.

Has he been checked for Leptospirosis? Not knowing everything, it sounds like he has a lot of the symptoms. Also, it's highly contagious and raccoons carry the bacteria in their urine. When your dog sniffs raccoon urine he/she could pick up the Leptospire bacteria. Ask your vet about it, especially if you haven't had him vaccinated for it. Here's a link for more info... Leptospirosis
I am praying for your pup to get better
