Grrrr...if men had to change their name...
they would never get married! I don't know why this has been such a PITA for me, but it is. I just spent over an hour at the bank while this lady chewed my ear off about things I wasn't interested in. It took me so long I didn't get anything else done and I have so many other things I need to do this on. Sorry for the vent. I just know if DH had to do this, his name would never be changed.

That's why I decided not to change my name. I'm too lazy. I still have my drivers license with my address from 4 apt's ago.

Re: Grrrr...if men had to change their name...
I totally sympathize! I feel like every so often, something pops up in my maiden name that I completely forgot about.
DMV & SS were easy enough, its all the other little things - credit cards, etc. that are the hassle.
The best was with my United airlines credit card. The credit card has my new name, but I didn't realize (Until going to redeem my airline miles) that the mileage account needed to be updated separately as well. Which of course made it fun ordering tickets..

Ladies, you don't HAVE to change your name. I don't really understand why this is a tradition in the US anyway.
I kept mine - both times!!

I think it's a personal choice. Personally I wanted to take on DH's name. I feel honored to have his name and have the name our kids will have. SS wasn't too bad, but it was a long wait. I have no clue when I will get to DMV though. The problem is that once you change your name on something major, you find out that you MUST change your name immediately on other things that deal with the first thing, otherwise you'll have a problem.

Re: Grrrr...if men had to change their name...
I didn't find changing my name to be all that difficult. Well, at least logistics & work wise. Mentally it was a big deal to me. I did it to make it easier when we had kids - I know too many hyphenated disasters when it came to last names.
Every so often I come across a notepad that says "Barbara C___" I write "misses her last name." underneath every time.
DH told me later that he wouldn't have married me if I didn't change my last name - which is really stupid of him to say. He knows I'm a good catch.

I never changed my name b/c I just didn't want to...lol. But seriously I have been who I am for 30 years and I like my last name. I feel like I would lose apart of my identity. I just don't know what I'll do when we have kids.

I haven't done it yet, but how do you do credit cards? Do you have to send them a copy of your marriage certificate?

My dilemia is when we have kids. Do I make my kids have two last names? I'm not sure I want to do this either.

Re: Grrrr...if men had to change their name...
Hyphenating would be a nightmare - our last name's are similar in that they end in the same 4 letters (Italian) so that was out. I tossed out the idea of my last name being our child's middle name and DH didn't love the idea
We'll probably go traditional and give our child DH's last name...I'm OK with not having the same name but I reserve the right to change it if I change my mind

I guess I have time to think about it. One of the names like if we have a girl does not go with Scott's last name AT All!

Re: Grrrr...if men had to change their name...
We both hyphenated our names. When we did it, the first place we went was Social Security. That wasn't bad, it was quick. The pain was DMV. They teller that we had said that she didn't think that I (as a guy) could legally change my name...she would have to check with a supervisor. We told her that she kind of had to...social security just did it with no problem.
The biggest pain about our names, is that each of our last names are 8 letters long, so we know have a 16 letter last name!
