Teachers-"just right books"

How do you teach your kids to find books just right for them? Does anyone use the"goldilocks, 5 finger rule?"

Re: Teachers-"just right books"

i teach first grade and i introduce the idea with goldilocks. I've heard other teachers using a bicycle analogy, riding uphill-too hard, riding downhill-too easy, riding on a straight road-just right.

I've done the 5-finger rule - but not sure if that's the same as "goldilocks" 5-finger. I put up a sign in the library center so they know just what to do (this was with 5th grade - but I can see it working w/ any grade, really).

I'm going to teach them the 5 finger rule, but I like the bicycle analogy too, very cute!

I took the description from another site

Do you remember Goldilocks' quest in the fairy tale "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" to find the porridge, chair, and bed that were "just right"? Selecting a book can sometimes feel the same
way. Just as Goldilocks found that some porridges were too hot or too cold and others were just right, beginning readers often have
difficulty finding books that are "just right" and not too hard or too easy.

5 Finger rule:

While reading the first page of a book, count the unknown words (using fingers to keep track is fine).

If there are five or more, the book is too hard for now. Wave bye bye!

Re: Teachers-"just right books"

I use the five finer rule, and as per my good friends F+P (Chat Icon ) I have a poster in the room after that mini lesson.

Re: Teachers-"just right books"

I used tp teach 6th grade. We would talk about certain criteria-The best comparison I ahve seen is riding a bike. You want to pick a spot in the book and read a paragraph or two. If you find it REALLY ahrd to pronounce words (five finger rule) and understand what's going on, then, the book isn't for you. We would draw pics of a kid on a bike and show it climbing up a hill to reflect a challenging book. Pictures work great!

Good luck! Chat Icon

We are using this program called the 100 Book Challenge. The kids level themselves using a check sheet where they indicate if a level is too easy, too hard or just right. The criteria for "just right" is that it should be "fast, easy and fun".

Of course, I introduced it with about 10 kids on Friday. About four kids placed themselves in the appropriate level and the others placed themselves too high. So I'll have to take running records with them to double check. Chat Icon

OK, I did the 5 finger rule w/ my 1st graders and I was amazed how well they did. The part that they loved was "if you raise 5 fingers, wave bye bye". They actually used it and the majority of them have started to make good book choicesChat Icon
