Baking: Scratch vs. Boxed Brands, poll included

I was talking to my friend yesterday and telling her how I made cupcakes for my nephew's birthday and it somehow came up that I used a boxed brand. And she said I'm surprised at you that you used something boxed, I make everything from scratch - I felt stupidChat Icon

Then I was saying how I don't know how to make from scratch - I dont' know what to use. She said its easy, tastier and cheaper.

And it got me thinkingChat Icon, 'am I the only one who uses box brands?

The only thing I've made from scratch are chocolate chip cookies and I've never noticed a difference in taste from slice n bake.

I never bake or cook from cans or boxes. I do it all from scratch. That is how my mom cooked, so I just followed suite.

I make 2 things from boxed -- angel food cake using the WW recipe. And no-pudge brownies -- which are better than most BAKERY brownies, never mind brownies from scratch.

I would never bring a boxed or supermarket cake or cookies to someone's house. I only make from scratch in that event. Or else get from a good bakery.

I do both. I bake from a box more often b/c it saves time, but I have some recipes that I bake from scratch.

I make things from boxed but only if I am in a jam. I will always make brownies & cupcakes from the box.

I make cookies & cakes from scratch when I have time to dedicate to them!

Oh My, I can't imagine how my life would be if there were not boxed or canned items! Yes, I use them. But I also do a fair share of baking and other cooking and make a lot from scratch. A good cookbook is a very good place to start!

I do use boxed things occasionally -- mostly for brownies, but bake bakes, cupcakes, cookies, breads, etc from scratch just because we have favorite family recipies that I love to use.

It totally depends....the boxed stuff is great if you are making large quantities or are making things on short notice...

Making things from scratch takes time and is enjoyable ONLY if you have the time....

I make cookies and cheesecakes from scratch but cakes & brownies are from the box. They are a time saver and really delicious Chat Icon

I most often bake from scratch, but typically because I am making desserts that my father who is diabetic can eat and I got a great sugar free desserts cookbook a couple of years ago.

I just bought my first pillsbury pie crust and was amazed at how quickly I could make a pie when I wasn't rolling out my own dough! I do still make the filling from scratch though....but its soooo easy.

Re: Baking: Scratch vs. Boxed Brands, poll included

I think the biggest issue here is time. If we had a kid, or two or three, I would probably do boxed much more.

I enjoy baking so I always do it from scratch. My nephew and I made homemade brownies last weekend and it was an eye-opener. Up to that point, I had only had boxed brownies and it was so much better.

I have a killer recipe for chocolate chip cookies that earned a "best chocolate chip cookie I've ever eaten" compliment from my husband. That's huge, he's like an expert. Chat Icon

Same here. I also like knowing what's going into whatever I'm making. And the taste is better.
