I like the idea of purchasing a nice piece of jewelry (diamond earrings, bracelet, pendant) and putting it away until their 16th (or 13th) birthday.

I got my god-daughter her first pair of diamond earnings, that of course she does not wear yet, bc now she is 6!

DH bought an Add-a-Pearl necklace for his niece on her first birthday. Each special occasion he brings the necklace to the jewelry and has another pearl added. It's something his grandfather did for all the women in the family, so it's full of sentiment.

Honestly sometimes they're first birthdays... they're more impressed with the box the gift came in than the actually gift. 
I'd keep it small. A nice childrens book or toy. I wouldn't spend too much.

I am getting my goddaughter a charm bracelet for being in my wedding. I plan to give her a charm for every occassion after that! I think it is a cute idea to be able to wear her memories..
