Does anyone want a lhasa apso...
Hi,
I'm usually on LIFamilies, but I really needed some help with my dog and figured I'd give you guys a shot.
I need to find a new home for my 5 year old Lhasa, Spanky. He is such a good, beautiful, loving, loyal, mush of a dog, but I have not been successful in housebreaking him. We have a five month old baby and Spanky urinates all over our house, in the baby's room, scratches the door frame, etc. We also have not been able to give him our most undivided attention like we have for the past five years. I don't know what else to do. I don't want to send him to a shelter and no one we know wants him because he does have this urinating problem. I've tried all suggestions, crating him (he can't take it), blocking off a section of the house for him ( he chewed the fram down to the sheetrock), praise, yelling, rubbing his nose in it, everthing. I need to find him a good and loving home b/c he really is a good doggie and maybe someone could be able to train him. Please give me some ideas as to where I can find him a home. If you are interested in having him, I will give him to you with all of his toys, food, leash, bedding, and everything for free. We really love him, but he's not working out with the baby. Thanks.

I can understand your frustration - but I think you need a trainer. A couple of sessions and your dog should no longer have this problem. PLEASE look into a trainer.

I highly recommend Bark Busters, a national training company. They were excellent with our Denver. Good luck

Aren't trainers expensive? Does anyone know of one I can contact?

Have you tried Belly bands? Do a web search on them if you may be interested. I'm active in 2 dachshund owner groups and some people who had issues training their dachshunds ussed these.

Re: Does anyone want a lhasa apso...
I hate to say it, but lhasa apso's aren't good dogs, they have nasty tempers, and are very hard to train, my parents had one and it bit my brother when he was on the floor one day playing video games with his friend, and it also bit my parents neighbor when she was over and hanging out with my brother. It was so scary, and the girl had to get 8 stiches on her lip. My father was ready to put it to sleep, but even though my brother was bit he still wanted to keep the dog, so they did but the dog couldn't be around kids anymore, and had to go outside when friends and family came over. They even tried a trainer, but he said that type of breed is known to be very vicious, and there not good around children. The dog (Cody) passed away a few years later, but my parents went through a lot of stress from that dog.
Good luck to you!

Re: Does anyone want a lhasa apso...
every dog is different-yes, breeds have common characteristics (although I have not heard that about lhasa apsos-im not saying it is not true-but I have never heard that before)
I would exhaust all avenues before giving the dog away-at least give the trainer a try, try the cans, try the belts...it takes time-but the dog can be trained...
good luck, I know this must be difficult

Re: Does anyone want a lhasa apso...
Is your dog fixed? Please call a trainer. I went to a local PetSmart & paid $126 for an 8 week class. Once we re-established ourselves as the dominant figure in the house it stopped. Please do not give up your dog when the problem can be solved with a little effort.
How did you try to housebreak your dog? Maybe get a crate & try to crate-train. That way you do not need to worry about the dog marking all over the house.
ETA: I have also not heard about that with lhasos, and since you have stated that your LA is a mush I would not even worry about temperament.

Try canine cadets. yes, training can be expensive, but that's part of dog ownership

Exactly. This dog needs a trainer, obviously he needed one years ago or he'd be housebroken by now. You need to take responsibility for him because you as the owner have turned him into a 5-year-old unhousebroken dog, people aren't exactly going to be jumping at the chance to take him.

Get a trainer and let him out to "make" every hour. Praise him A LOT when he makes outside. He'll get it.

Re: Does anyone want a lhasa apso...
I have to say I have a 9yo lhasa apso and this problem just started with mine. Nothing I do works its jealousy, so I now crate him again. So far this has worked.
But, I agree with everyone else try a trainer before getting rid of him it might work.
