ADopting from a shelter vs rescue group.....discuss please.
Ok....so I was flamed awhile back for wanting a 3rd dog and now we have baby #2 on the way. We are still *thinking* about it.....we might wait until the baby comes and is settled into a routine.
I'm home ALL the time now.
While I totalyl want to adopt from a kill shelter, I am terrified of not knowing what we are getting.....
housebreaking....eh, not a big deal.
Good with my other 2.....again, not a HUGE deal, but an issue.
I'm afraid of how it is with kids. How do I know if this animal is going to bite my baby? What would we do if it actually did bite? 
Adopting from a rescue group...at least we'd know if it's good with kids and/or other dogs and the foster home could advise on it's behavior, etc. But some of them charge over $300. I know the $$ goes towards care, but why are some $85 to adopt and others $300??? For $300 a person could go to a breeder!!!

If you have all of these questions, maybe it is best you do not adopt another dog and leave well enough alone.

$300 vs $85
at a kill shelter the dog is there for prob 3-7 days. at most. they feed them, yes. but imo the food is probably donated food. of course they still have expenses, but not nearly as big as ones in rescue orgs.
dogs in rescue orgs are there for days, weeks, months and sometimes years. the foster parents spend $$ out of their own pocket on foods, toys, beds, clothes, etc.
these dogs get medical treatment while in foster care. if they have health issues, they are seen to. they get nuetered. rescue orgs do transport..... etc etc.

I don't know about paying money, we got Misty through the Weimeraner rescue association and didn't pay anything. We did do all the legwork, however, and drove into Queens to meet her and the owners and we took her directly from the original owners so maybe that's why.
As far as paying $300, sometimes it makes sense...if the rescue group has to fix the dog, vaccinate it and house it, these things all cost money. When we got Misty, she wasn't fixed and it cost us $400 to spay her and get her updated on all her shots - kind of makes up for not paying for her KWIM?

I adopted one of my current dogs from a Kill Shelter and she's EXCELLENT! She was actually on "death row" and would have been put to sleep in a couple of days. I think that regardless of whether you adopt from a kill shelter or a rescue, you are saving a life because that empty space at the rescue can be filled by another dog.

This is why. Not all rescue orgs get huge funding, and many times you pay for the dog's care up until that point.
Places like NSAL get millions in donations every year, so the cost is not a burden of the adopter. Whereas the smaller orgs, do not get huge donations annually, and must distribute the costs among the adopters.

never said we WERE adopting, it is a consideration and we are weighing the options as far as where to go when we feel the time is right.
We already have 2 dogs, so having another is not a huge burden, it's more of finding a dog that will fit perfectly in our family, when the time is right.
