Thinking about taking a crusie and I'd like some advice.

So we are talking about what type of vacation we're going to take. It's not definite decision we'll take a cruise. But I would like to know what you all think about cruises & if they make for a great vacation. There are sooo many options!!

We would rather leave from N.Y or N.J., not fly to FL. & use a port there.

Or do you think that it's better to go out of FL.? What were the best ports of call? Are cruises worth it, or is it better to fly to the islands & stay at a resort?

I added a poll to see what cruise lines you all think are the best. I put Dinsey, however we don't have children, I don't know if it's a good cruise with out children. Tell me everything!

Re: Thinking about taking a crusie!!!!!

i would definitely recommend leaving from FL versus NY. Leaving from NY can make for a bumpier ride. And i 100% recommend Royal Carribean (sp??). Certain cruise lines can have too young of a crowd and some can have too old of a crowd. RC is perfect!!!! YOu can't go wrong with it.

Re: Thinking about taking a crusie!!!!!

Ive been on :

Royal Car. - mixed group-all ages-went in HS with -great food, great shows,I remember the waiters and waitress STILL

Princess- I was in HS-we went for a family reunion-the food was BEYOND wonderful, service was too, older crowd
though, I dont remember much about the shows..

Carnival-went for New years with dh and his brother and his girlfriend-food was not that good-we were on an older ship-but we had A FABULOUS time!

Celebrity-honeymoon-we were looking for something different-it was an 11 day Med. Cruise- We had a wonderful time, the food at dinner was wonderful, buffet in the afternoon was "typical" nothing out of this world, but not bad, service was fantastic. It was a mixed crowd-older people and than 30-35 honeymoon couples...I would venture to say NOT many singles-which probably wouldnt matter much-shows were good-some were DEF. geared to the older crowd, we didnt care-we were on our honeymoonChat Icon

Thanks ladies. I have heard a lot of good things about Royal Carribean also. I would have never thought about the ride out of NY being bumpier...very good point.

Keep the info coming. Thanks!

Re: Thinking about taking a crusie and I'd like some advice.

I just got back from a cruise that left from San Juan on Carnival, and although I had a good time, I felt that there were just too many kids on the ship. That is a good think if you are traveling with kids, but if you dont want them jumping all over your chair while you are laying out by the pool or crying during the evening shows than choose another cruise line. Leaving out of NY IMO is a waste of cruise time, because you spend so many days at sea trying to get to the caribbean that on an 8 day cruise you are only in port like 3 or 4 days. There are things to do on the ship, but after 1 day at sea you are itching to get off that boat and go do something!

Re: Thinking about taking a crusie and I'd like some advice.

I can't say which is better since I've only been on one, but I did enjoy the cruise we took last christmas with DH's family on Carnival. We had a great time - I thought the food was very good, good excursions and the people who worked on it were great! There were kids - but I don't remember it being tons.

One thing I would tell you from experience - make sure if you are leaving out of Florida to be there at least the day before.

Our ship left at 4:00 PM on Christmas day - we were flying out of Islip early that morning - should have been down there by about 11:30-12:00. We got fogged in, transported to Laguardia where we were fogged in some more and ended up not making it to FL until around 7:00 PM. We ended up having to drive to Miami (couldn't get a flight from Tampa) and fly the next day to Grand Cayman (with a long stop-over in Jamica) and finally caught up with the ship on the 27th. NEVER AGAIN!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

We went on a NCL cruise out of NY in July for our HMChat Icon We had a great time! We liked that there was always something going on but there was no set schedule that you had to follow. The ride wasn't too bumpy, although I did have to take the sea calm pills they had on board bc I'm a wimp! If you have any questions FM!

The 1st cruise we went on is no longer in service but our 2nd, just this year was Royal Caribbean and I highly recommend it. We went out of NJ and loved it. I liked the fact that we could sleep in for a couple of days as we weren't at our ports that fast.

That's a really good point...I have heard a lot of people say it's a waste to leave from NJ because you spend so much time actaully getting to the port of call.

But on the other hand as you said it's nice to relax and sleep in for the first day or so, and then get to the Islands! Thanks!

Re: Thinking about taking a crusie and I'd like some advice.

We went out on the Norweigian Dawn from NY to the Bahamas... it was the first and only cruise i went on so i dont have much to compare it to... the food was good... the ride was smooth... i guess the full days at sea were a bit boring... my favorite part was having the ports and getting off the ship... but when you travel from NY to Fla you dont get as many ports...

we are going on another Norweigian cruise in June... we are going to Alaska! Im super excited... we used Dawn from Cruise One (a vendor on here) she was awesome and SOO knowledgable about the different cruise lines and she had the best prices... maybe contact her for some more info about the differnt cruise lines?

St. Thomas was cancelled for us so we actually had 5 days at sea. I found nothing wrong with that. We found things to do all day and all night.

We just got back from a cruise on Royal Caribbean. It was great!! We left from Miami and went to the Bahamas and Key West, amongst others. But my DH went on RC with his family from NY to Bermuda years back. He liked that one too.

Re: Thinking about taking a crusie and I'd like some advice.

We love to cruise & leaving out of NY is the best! We have not encountered a bumpy ride in the 2 times out of NY. Here are the cruises we did:

Princess: Out of NY to Bermuda. We were on the Pacific Princess (original Love Boat), small ship only 620 passengers. Had one of the best times. Smooth sailing (august). Food & service were immpecable.

Disney: We did the land & sea tour from Disney. We did 3 days on the Disney Boat. It was a nice trip but honestly I didn't like the boat that much. Food was good but I think it is more of a ship for people with "kids" & even then, it was not that impressive to us.

Norweigan : Out of NY for 10 days to the Eastern Caribbean for our HM in April. We choose this cruise bc of the islands & also going out of NY. DH & I were a little disappointed w/Norweigan & the "freestyle" cruising as we didn't feel the food was up to par & there was not much variety like we found on Princess. Another VERY smooth trip with the exception of the rough waters off San Juan that we hit. The boat was pounded with over 18 foot waves.

Personally, DH & I like to leave out of NY or NJ. There is no hassle when it comes to airports & delays. From the minute you leave the house, you are on vacation & do not have to deal with anything but traffic

Re: Thinking about taking a crusie and I'd like some advice.

My favorites are Celebrity and Princess.
I would love to go on a Royal Caribbean and Holland America. I have heard fantastic things about both.

I have been on Carnival and Norwegian as well, but they are not as nice as the other cruise lines IMO They are still nice though.
