Bayshore Schools

Hey Ladies,
Can you tell me what you know about Bayshore schools? How are the elementry & middle especially? We do love Holbrook but we can get a better deal in Bayshore and somebody told me its changing over and they are doing a lot of work to clean it up. Is this true? Is it worth checking out? I know Bayshore but my ideas are from a couple of years ago. If they are REALLY cleaning it, please let me know.
Thanks Kerry

Re: Bayshore Schools

I live in Bayshore and we dont have kids yet but I read up on the schools and they are getting better. And they are doing a complete overhaul of the Main Street area. New stores, a community garden, etc.

I'm from W. Babylon, and my Mom works in Babylon, and has alot of clients who live in Bayshore. They say the schools are getting better and better each year, and I also think the town itself is getting nicer.

ok, maybe its worth checking out. What can you tell me about the areas (ie streets) these homes are located on:
cute with new construction next store
needs work, but its liveable
close to LIRR, is that bad though
needs work, siding has water damage

Bayshore is a good school district. DH is a teacher and knows alot of teachers in other districts who would agree that its good.

Bay Shore offers some great programs and a lot of money seems to be getting spent on the schools and town center. The high school just completed a massive extension. I know a couple of attorneys who graduated from Bay Shore.

Some of the houses you posted the links for don't show location on the map, so I can't comment on them all. I live one town over and know most streets pretty well and, honestly, yes there are some really nice areas of Bay Shore and you can get good deals there, but I don't think any of these houses are in those areas.

I love Bay Shore and we would have bought there if we found the right house, so I would still keep it on your list if I were you.

Re: Bayshore Schools

I also heard bayshore is getting better. if i were to buy a house in bayshore, there would be certain areas I would stay in and others I would avoid. Brightwaters, Brightwaters Farms is nice.

The sideblocks by target are my ideal area in Bay Shore.

Re: Bayshore Schools

I have a friend who is a principal in Bay Shore...I know there are problems--I would go with another district if it were me. I know there is violence in the middle schools, but maybe elementary is OK. My friend compared it to Brentwood.

Good to know. I'm very familiar with Brentwood and would NEVER send my child there.

Re: Bayshore Schools

I work in Bay Shore (high school level) and the programs that are offered to the students are wonderful. There are a ton of teachers who live in the district and love it. As far as violence is concerned, I feel that, unfortunately, can, and is, happening in many places on Long Island. Good luck with your decision!!!

IMO I wouldnt compare it with Brentwood at all. DH had a friend who is a teacher in the high school and agreed that its getting much better. Everyone has their own opinions but comparing it to Brentwood is inaccurate IMO.

Re: Bayshore Schools

The last house looks to be the best but I wouldn't live in any of these areas. They are very "rough". My friend lives in Bay Shore and is constantly telling me what goes on in the schools. There is violence, gang activity etc. Loads of problems. Although she agrees that there are some great programs, I don't think it is someplace I would want to send my kids to.

i think it is better than brentwood, but i also think it is a close comparison. yes, there is violence everywhere, but i wouldn't send my kids there. my friend is a principal so i don't think the violence is imaginary. it's real. dh's groomsman's parents own a popular restaurant on main street in bay shore and patrons/workers have been robbed leaving at night going to the dark parking lot behind the restaurant. someone tried to rob me leaving an ATM (when I was in my car!) on main street in bay shore. though we go to the bay shore bars occasionally, i never feel safe there, and occasionally when i took the train to the bay shore station i was not a fan.

that's a ridiculous thing to say. of course anyone can be robbed anywhere, but violence is obviously more prevalent in some areas than others. and students have the ability to succeed in any school environment but obviously some schools are better and safer than others.

funny though, i've never gotten robbed (or attempted) anywhere else, and i have worked in washington d.c., new york city.... regardless, it was something that happened to me that i feel is relevant.

and I appreciate that. I do. I think we aren't going to look in Bayshore, just stick to Ronkonkoma, Lake Ronkonkoma & Holbrook.
