What is the timing for changing utilites?
Do you set up new LIPA, Cable, etc accounts before you close?
We will be in the house after closing, I assume, since its empty. When do I call for utilities?
TIA!

I wouldn't call until after you close. Otherwise you are going to be paying for them.
Just call the day you close....it is fairly easy.
If you are moving in right away, you might want to set up a cable appointment now, but schedule it for after you close on the house....

Re: What is the timing for changing utilites?
I called the day we closed. The electricity , etc was still on under the previous owner's name for almost a week after we closed (I had issues with the phone and subsequently Optimum online b/c of that).

this is so funny. The sellers kept the water and lipa in their name and when we closed we changed it over. We signed the oil contract that week.

Re: What is the timing for changing utilites?
Find out when the seller is shutting off utilities(your lawyer can ask sellers attorney)since the house is empty u will probably take occupancy right away, have your utilites turned on same day they shut off. if u are going to use cable(optimum)order it now, they are always back logged especially with the holidays good luck 2u

I always tell the utility co. the turn-on, turn-off date for my closing date. It always seems to work out fine for me.

Re: What is the timing for changing utilites?
I am in the minority but i called prior to the closing for everything: LIPA, Keyspan, Cable, Water, etc. LIPA still managed to mess it up and keep it in the old owners name for another two weeks - even though I kept calling them to make sure it was done.

I tired calling early , but I was told I can't do anything until the sellers call & move their service.
My previous moves were always vacant rentals & I called as soon as I knew when I'd be moving in.
