This is probably a silly Q but I need to ask anyway...
when the recipe says "cream cheese softened", does that mean leave it out for like an hour or nuke it?
I don't want it to spoil

Leave it out for as long as it takes to get to the pint where it's very sloppy to cut with a knfe.
Does that make sense?
