SO Norton is reverting back to his baby days!!!!
We used to leave him in his cage when he was a baby. Then we let him have the whole kitchen and he was good, so we let him have the whole house (mostly).
After about a month or so, he started tearing up his beds and the rugs, and we kept having to buy new ones. $$$$$$$
Then we put him back into just the kitchen.......now he's chewing all of the wooden knobs off the kitchen cabinets!!!!!!!  He opens the cabinets and pulls out all of the contents........
We put the cabinet child proof things on, but now we have no knobs..... He's getting worse!!!!
Advice? He's a 15 month lab.....

How often do you exercise him? He's barely an "adult" (some consider dogs puppies until 24 months) and he's a lab. He needs a LOT of exercise outside.
Try that, it seems like he's acting out of boredom and extra energy!

DH takes him to the park almost every day!!! We took him on Sunday for almost an hour and he still chewed up stuff......

I agree. He is an adolescent at this point and needs to have plenty of activity.
Also have you considered professional training? Chewing is annoying for the owner, but it can be downright dangerous for the dog. If he was/is chewing wood, it is possible for a splinter to perforate his intestines, which can be very very dangerous, not to mention possible toxins that he could ingest.

Exactly, I agree.
I have seen a similar story on "The Dog Whisperer" and Cesar recommended a lot of activity and excercise... Also, he suggested that the dog run on a treadmill when the people could not take him out that much.
I had something similar happen- Charlotte, our angel, was being very good so we gradually moved her up from half of a crate, to full crate, to a small area fenced off, to half the kitchen, to the full kitchen... Then, one day we noticed that she would chew the kitchen table chairs- interesting (we thought). Then, we realized that on days where we played with her a lot, gave her attention and walked her like normal she would be fine- on days where we didn't have time, she would chew.
Then, our Vet also suggested giving her just a little bit more food when she eats- that it might be b/c she is hungry. We tried bitter apple on the chairs but that did not work for us- some dogs don't mind it, some dogs hate it so you can TRY it but I don't think it's going to work. I think if you up her food just a little or give her a treat more often-- and excercise her on the treadmill, in the yard, around the house, etc. that it will make a difference! It did for Char...
And if that does not work then the next step is downsizing him back to a smaller area where he cannot destroy- that will be his punishment... Then, if he gets better, after a while, you can increase again but if he does something bad again then reduce-- Maybe that chain of events will help him realize that when he does the bad behavior- he gets his "area" reduced- when he is good then it increases.

In addition to all of the other recommendations, make sure that your dog has plenty of toys. Supply him with things that he can chew on, dog bones etc. so that he chews on that instead of your stuff.

Back in the crate he goes... No ifs and or butts about it... No way would I let my dog destroy my house... This is also the most safe and secure place to leave your pet… You also don't have to worry about them eating something that will harm them.
Both my dogs (one is an 8 month old lab) stay in the crate all day... Yes I do exercise them but I still wouldn't leave them out to roam the house. My lab does chew up every blanket and sheet we leave in the crate with her.. So I can only imagine what she would do if I left her out all day

I would think that leaving him in his crate all day would make him more resentful, if he's chewing his blankets.
Norton gets a kong full of treats, bones out the butt and all of his toys in the kitchen, still loves those knobs. He stinks on a leash pretty much, but I guess more walks and more trips to the park.....I think he needs more food too, even though the vet said he should only get a cup 2x a day. I don't think it's enough....

How much does he weigh? What does the package say?
I would think that's not enough only because my puppy (16 weeks) eats 1/2 cup 2X a day. Your baby eats twice that and is much older AND a lab.

he used to get 2 cups 2x a day and he was a little chubby. I feed him in the morning so I sneak him an extra little bit.

Wow! Do your dogs know Misty? There isn't a safe blanket, quilt or pillow in the house if she has free roam. She's good for a week or so and then all of a sudden we come home to a guilty face and a chewed something or other.
Misty stays in her crate, as Mrskimmy said "It's the safest place"

No I don't think that Darlee is resentful at all about being in the crate.. My trainer told us that dogs are never ever resentful or spiteful... they are only stressed out and that is why they will act out.. The only way my dogs would be stress free would be if I stayed home all day with them.. which just can't happen.. so to me the crate is the best place for them.

Have you considered getting another dog? I know it sounds crazy but, I have a dog that was extemely hyper so we got her a companion and it really mellowed her down. It is especially helpful if you are not around all day. The dog won't be as reliant on your attention and companionship so he won't be as needy.
Also have you tried the spray bottle method? It works very well with my dogs. When you see the dog doing some unwanted behavior you telll them no and give them a quick squirt (to the body area - not the face) I make the shhh sound too. After a few times you won't even need to use it. They usually stop the behavior when they see the bottle. I shake it for extra drama. It's better to teach them not to do something than to keep taking things away. they need to learn what they are not allowed to do. If you need to keep a spray bottle in each room - so you are always enforcing. Be careful not to over spray the dog or he will eventlually get use to it and it may become ineffective.
Finally, you can try putting something on your knobs. I think they sell a pepper type spray for dogs that you can put on the item they keep going for. I think it has a bitter or slightly hot taste they dislike - but I can't be certain. Do a search on Petco for someting like this. Petco also has user reviews so you can get a feel for if it's working for people or not.

From personal experience I can tell you this is not the best solution. You will then have one dog to train and a puppy to re-train. Sorry.

Hes still a baby... you cant expect him to sit home all day and do nothing!! He HAS to be tired when you leave... very tired.

Well I never said the new dog had to be a puppy. They could get a dog already house trained.
It worked extremely well for me and eliminated alot of my dogs anxiousness.

There is no way I could use the spray technique, he does it when we aren't home!!!
I would love to get him a companion, but DH would never.....
The thing that gets me is that he has been a complete angel for so long, and now this!!!
I used the spray on the knobs already, he actually chewed more with it on there!
I am going to try to take him for a walk in the mornings, of course it's freezing out now!!!!

If you think it is separation anxiety, you can also try leaving on the TV to a talk station or the radio. That can also help.
