I am really scared, please help! .........THANK YOU!

Our kitten just meowed REALLY loud twice (a wierd deep meow like we've never heard) then she hacked a few times and threw up. I went over to clean it up (may be TMI) and it was gray-ish in color and watery. I looked a little closer and something was moving in it! It looks like a worm!!!!!! It's very thin and white-ish/pink-ish in color... *** is that???!!

Did this happen to anyone else's pet ever?? How could she have eaten a worm and if she didn't eat it, how did it get in her body????? Help, i'm so nervous and scared. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I kept the worm... it's in the freezer. Should I call the vet now... she seems okay but the worm is freaking me out!

Take her to the vet. She probably has some type of parasitic worm. They have meds for it.

Most kittens are born with tapeworm. My kitty had tapeworm recently, and I read that in some circumstances, the cat will vomit up the tapeworm. Our cat did not vomit up the worm,we gave her medication and it was passed normally thru her system.

I'd watch her closely overnight, and call the vet first thing in the morning.

Ok, whew. Tapeworm I have heard of. Can I call a vet this late?

She's been to the vet twice already for normal check ups (the last one being a week ago)... she's 7 months old. Could the vet have missed that??

You can call an emergency animal center. I know there is on Old Country Road in Westbury that is open all night.

Forgot to answer your question on how, but cats get tapeworm because they eat a flea, and it somehow morphs into a worm in their body and attaches to their intestine, and just regenerates.

I dont know why but I read that most kittens are born with it. When the vet administers the first set of shots, they usually also give a worm treatment.

Our vet gave us the meds to get rid of the worm (2 pills) and a 3 month regimine of flea control. I've never seen a flea on my cat, or in my house ANYWHERE, but somehow she got to one. (shes an indoor only cat too.) I'm think I may have brought a flea in from visiting my sisters house - she has a dog.

Thanks so much! I just did a search and found this:

"Roundworms themselves look like spaghetti noodles and can be present in stool or vomit. They are easily treatable with oral medication. "

It has to be a roundworm... that is exactly what it looked like. Do you think I can wait until the morning to call the vet? I know i'm going to be worried all night... but she is acting like her normal crazy self.

Yes - they could have missed it, because a test of fecal matter won't pick it up, as the worm is not in the specimin. Our kitty definietly had tapeworms (I found a worm on her pillow) but her fecal specimin came back negative.

I read that they can also live with the tapeworm, and it will eventually get rid of itself without meds. The tapeworm supposedly does not take enough of the nutrition from the cat to make it life threatening. But I would NOT do that - I'd bring the cat in ASAP.

My cat makes that WEIRD meow too when he is going to throw up...

Then he is his normal self afterwards!

Not familiar with worms, but good luck with your kitty!Chat Icon

Roundworms, I'm not sure about. Our kitty had a tapeworm. If you are worried now, as a previous poster suggested I'd call a 24 hour vet and get their opinion. They can probably tell you what warning signs to watch for that you should bring her in right away.

same thing happened to my kitty Jess! don't worry too much, you can get the de-wormer in your local pet store or Petco. works rather quickly!!

but i know the feeling of when you see it and freak out cause it came out of your kitty! but kitty will be okay, this is TOTALLY common among cats & dogs.

That happened to my cat, it was roundworm... I brought the cat to the vet and they prescribed a dewormer and I had to her one pill and then like a month later give her another pill... not a big deal, quite common, but gross Chat Icon I don't know how your cat is about taking pills, but I'd have the vet do it if you can... my cat was impossible.

Re: I am really scared, please help! .........THANK YOU!

sounds like roundworms, check his poop too......there will be a bunch of them moving around.

Go to the vet and get medicine and keep checking the poop, when the worms don't move, he's getting better.

It's gross I know!

Thanks girls!!! She is doing fine... being crazy as usual! I looked in her poop and was expecting the worst, but there weren't any worms in there.

I called the vet and they said she will be fine and I can take her in tonight at 6:15.
