looking for a puppy for our family...

yeah.. we tried that but there are slim pickins' since the holiday was just here and i guess that is a big gift idea!! so we were going to try some one privately!! thanks though!

If you are willing to wait a few weeks the shelters will be "BUSTING" with unwanted puppies from the holidays. Try The Little Shelter in Huntington or Petfinder.com.
Also if you have sone some breed-specific research, try the akc's website to find breed-specific rescue.

Please don't buy a puppy.... the shelters will (sadly) be full of puppies within the next few weeks.
ETA: Petfinder has PLENTY of puppies that are available in the NY/LI area.

This one is in the Wantagh Animal shelter. Im guessing it will be put down if not adopted soon

I got my baby from PETFINDER.COM
There are thousand of puppies on.
I was particular about what I wanted... it had to be brown and large breed. I looked for 2 weeks on petfinder (they post new pups daily) Finally found one I wanted. He flew to us in about 2 weeks. We picked him up the day we got back from our honeymoon. He's the love of my life!!!!!
That dog posted above is BEAUTIFUL!!! I Hope he gets adopted soon!!
PLEASE ADOPT!! THERE are soooo many out there in every breed shape, color and size.... Hope you have luck... here is my baby Bailey as a puppy. now hes a big boy!
Let us know if you find one!

He is so ADORABLE! Seriously if I didn't have my crazy dog I would have snatched him up

ok.. so I went there and the lady told me that she already had 4 applications on him and that I was the 5th!!! 
then she asked me if i had any children, which I do. She asked their ages and I told that they are 1 and 2. she said that they are not able to let me adopt him because my children are too small to have a hyper puppy like him! Which really annoyed me because don't you think that is my call!!!! I mean if he interacts well with them and my husband and I feel that he would be fine.. what is the big deal??!! Anyway, she made a big deal over how old my kids were and having a puppy... I got so aggrevated that I had to leave!!!
So no luck yet ladies... but keep the ideas comin'!

OH NO I have to say though... I have a retriever/chow mix. I LOVE HIM but he is SO hyper! I can't handle him sometimes. He is about 70 pounds and im scared to even get pregnant right now because im not sure I could handle both of them. I thought he would be a good mix for you though cause labs are known to be good with kids
ETA they are probably looking out for you and the dog. Unfortantly to many people adopt dogs and can't handle them or their children and the dog or the dog is to big or to hyper and they return it to a shelter. So sad for the poor dog And it happens WAY TO MUCH!

Im not sure how chi's are with children. But they are cute and little (I don't know to much about the breed)

Havanese are small (15 pounds) but hearty, nonshedding (which is wonderful!), hypoallergenic dogs that are wonderful with children. If you are interested in rescue:

Def. try NSAL if you have not had luck at local shelters. They get pups in from the south all the time. I got my Barney there. ANd my brother got an awsome Lab mix there in Sept.

Ok.. so here is another update on our search for a puppy. I went to petfinder.com and saw a boxer mix- it was from Pet Rescue in Mt. Vernon, NY. Anyway, we had to fill out an application and they apparently called my references and said that we were approved for adoption. They are an all volunteer rescue center upstate and the volunteers actually go to high kiill shelter in the south and rescue puppies, dogs, cats.. you name it they rescue it.
So she said that the boxer mix we were interested in was adopted by someone that needed him. But she has a litter of pups, also boxer mixes, she thinks they are boxer\lab mixes (which should be adorable) that are 2 weeks old and will be ready to go out as early as the end of January. I am waiting patiently for her to send me pictures and if we like the look of the litter, we can set up a private meeting and pick our puppy.. 
We are sooo excited.... I just hope this works out... Thank you all so much for the help!! I will keep everyone posted as to the status of our search for a pup-- I will try to get pictures on here as soon as they send'em to me!!!!
