HOWARD HAS A HOME!! Updated below!
took howard to the vet today and he got a clean bill of health! he is heartworm negative, about which i was SO relieved...
one of my colleagues and her husband have been looking for a dog for a little while. she had always had terrier mixes as a child, so she fell in love with howard instantly! they take their cat to the vet i use, so i was easily able to check into their history. they agreed to give howard back to me if they couldn't care for him... but it was love at first sight  they took him home tonight.
so of course i am now sitting here crying because i miss him already. deep down i know that finding him a home was the best thing, but right now i am so sad

howard was a stray dog who followed me home from the woods behind my house last week. he is the sweetest little guy, but didn't quite fit into my family for multiple reasons... so i found him another home.

i'm not sure, but my husband is working directly with howard's adoptive mother and will ask her today... i picked "howard" so i could call him "howard the coward" because he was so scared of everything! hopefully pretty soon the name will no longer fit him

Great job in being such a great pet caretaker in the meantime! I'm sure Howard will add lots of Christmas joy to his new home!

thank you, everyone, for your kind words and well wishes!
apparently howard did reasonably well in his new home overnight - only one "accident", and his new owner was able to get a leash on him this morning (which took me 3 days!). i think he is going to do just fine

howard is doing beautifully. he is almost completely housetrained!! and he is coming out of his shell to his new owners, as well as to his new sister (an older cat named tess). he is signed up for an obedience class starting in january
