My DS is getting evaluation for Speech ?

I am a little upset about this but the teacher in my DS Pre K class confronted me today and ask me if I would want my DS to be evaluation for speech ?
She told me he is very hard to understand sometimes.
What should I expect that they are going to do ? And is there any way I can prepare my DS about this ?
He doesnt do well with strangers ?
Also he is turning 5 in October 24
And everyone is turning 5 now ?
Do you think it because he is the youngest ? Immature speech ?

Re: My DS is getting evaluation for Speech ?

Hi - I'm a certified special education teacher. Being that your son is at an early age its a perfect time for him to be evaluated. Speech and language development is very crucial but also very easy to target at a younger age. Being evaluated will not be stressful for your son at all. He won't even realize he is being evaluated. I understand your concern and your feelings which is why I wanted to respond. If they find a need for additional service he will get push in or push our speech therapy. Also, it is very likely that he will "grow out of it" and overcome it OR he will be one of the lucky ones who benefit from early intervention!

Good luck with your wonderful son! It's nice to have a savy and concerned parent ... he is lucky!

Let me know how it works out! I'm sure his teacher has your sons best interest in mind. I think of all the children who do not get services due to lack of funding and it makes me happy that schools are now trying to treat children so young. Early intervention is the key to success! It really is. Plus, it can reduce anxiety for your son.

So, there you go - my opinion and advice. But keep in mind, Im biased - I do this for a living! lol

i'm a speech therapist at a school, so i sent you FM Chat Icon
it won't hurt at all for him to be evaluated. speech problems are really common with kids becasue of all the muscles involved. as, like the other poster said, the sooner you start working on them, the better!

im a special ed teacher and i work with pre schoolers, like the above posters stated he prob wont even realize he's being evaluated! most likely they will come to your home or you will go to an office with a bunch of toys and fun things for your son to do. I wouldnt worry because the only thing that can come out of him getting speech therapy is better language skills, good luck!

me too, you have nothing to worry about...your son will not even realize he is being tested...articulation issues are very common with young children and he should do well with intervention.
