? for those with MF IF due to Varicocele
Has anyone's DH had the surgery to repair a varicocele? DH has a bilateral varicocele and have decided to move onto IVF with ICSI however, we would like to have more than one kid....preferably 3 or 4 and I was wondering what are the chances of a successful surgery? DH's counts were really low and he is currently on a regimen of vitamins. We are also waiting for the results of his second SA to see if there has been any improvement. I have read all the info online and basically every dr says that your chances are about 50/50. DH is in the process of shortly going to his urologist to schedule the surgery but I wanted to know if anyone had an experience good or bad. After 7 years of marriage we are ready to get the ball rolling on popping out little ones. Thanks in advance!

my dh also has a vericocele and we decided to do IVF with ICSI. With ICSI youdon't need to have the surgery my rec would be to do IVF with ICSI and then have i repaired after for Children in the future! My RE said this would be the best plan based on our age and after the surgery it takes 6 months to a year for SA to be improved

As Amy said, it takes 6 months to a year for the surgery to fully repair and the male factor to improve after the surgery. The only kink is that sometimes the surgery doesn't work and/or scar tissue may form in place of the varicocele. It's really a personal decision. If you have good insurance, you could probably do the IVF/ICSI 4 or more times without any problems. Remember, although your insurance may say they only cover $25K not everything you do during IVF is part of the $25K - usually it's just the retrieval transfer and meds.

My DH has bilateral vericoceles & low count...we are scheduled for surgery for March 8th....Because of the time issue we will proceed to IVF/ICSI unless a miracle happens and his count goes up to more than 20mil....
Usually it takes up to a year to really see improvements...especially if you are dealing with very very low counts...Also, the size of vericoceles matter as well...the bigger the veins the better improvements...My DH has Grade III which are the biggest and easily seen with a naked eye....DH was also put on Clomid to raise his T levels which are very low due to the vericoceles...

DH and I decided not to have the surgery. Our RE said that recovery takes awhile and that there is no guarantee that it will work. We decided to go straight for IVF with ICSI.

Thank You guys so much. I think we are going to go ahead with IVF/ICSI and have DH do surgery. Hopefully his count will improve for our second pregnancy.  to all!
