Jewish baby naming???
I am throwing this question out in hopes that someone may know... my dd is having her baby naming and I have a new Rabbi (reformed) which Ive always been from a conservative temple. I was wondering...how do the Rabbis choose the names for the baby? I called this Rabbi and he kind of threw some "pretty" hebrew names out instead of naming for the deceased people we chose to be named for. For example my fathers name was with a "G" his hebrew name was with a "G" and they named her with a "Z"...whats that about? If you have any extra info for me I would so appreciate it! Thanks!

No, the Rabbi converts the deceased name into hebrew. Though I am VERY confused myself right now bc I feel like he pulled the names from the sky!

Re: Jewish baby naming???
Oh NO! And I already picked out a Hebrew name I really like!!
Is it the case with conservative Rabbis only or a rule in general?
Can you at least suggest something you like?

I am unsure if you can pick your own names but it sounds like mine will let you pick...LOL I honestly dont know the answer. P.S. I tried to ask on the main board to figuring more people would see it...it got removed...what the heck...

Re: Jewish baby naming???
You can use the Hebrew name of someone you want to honor. It does not have to be chosen by a rabbi though he can help you since he may be more versed.
Our DD is Hannah which is actually Hebrew for Grace (DW's g-ma)
Her Hebrew names were fun trying to figure out.....
My Grandfather's were: Baruch and Moshe
Baruch for a girl is Bracha (blessing) Moshe did not really have a female version however The song of Moses is Shira ...which is also the Torah as we call it a song so....
Hannah Paige was named Shira Bracha

Re: Jewish baby naming???
I'm not sure I understand. DS is named after DH's granfather and my great uncle. We named DS's hebrew name the same hebrew names as those we named him after (the deceased). It was the english names that we changed. Is it because your DS is named after a male that he needs to adjust the hebrew names accordingly?

Re: Jewish baby naming???
I've never heard of a rabbi picking the name. We chose DD's Hebrew name to honor my deceased grandmother, whose name stared with an E. We chose Esther as the Hebrew name. The rabbi really had no say in it.

the Rabbi has to adjust 3 male names to female for my dd. Its for her grandfather and 2 great grandfathers is her middle names.

Ahh, got it! You might want to let him know names you had in mind them. Maybe Golda for the "G" name?

Re: Jewish baby naming???
THe Rabbi can either translate his american name into hebrew (for example Jacob is very often Yaacov) - or you can pick/work with the Rabbi on hebrew names.
Talia's name (first and middle) are hebrew so her hebrew name is actually the same.
