you can do it in a day, the flight is 1 hr 13 minutes from London. However factoring in check in times and getting to the airport, that would be another sort of 3/4 hours in the day, so I don't know if it would be worth it. If you could do it and stay overnight 1 night, you would be better off.

We went overnight. We used a jumper flight out of Gatwick. I believe it left at 1300. It arrived in Amsterdam at 1420, and once we went through customs & got our stamp & got out of the airport it was about 1500. We stayed one night in a budget/tourist hotel (one step up from a hostel) and did "Amsterdam things." It was a blast, but I totally could have stayed another day. We went mid-week.

you could do it, but as stated above the travelling times to the airport and then to amsterdam centraal from the airport take time.

also a lot of flights on the budget airlines to amsterdam leave from luton or stansted. i have gone to amsterdam a few times from london and i would rather stay a few days- at least 2.

If I remember correctly it took longer than 3 hours to get to Amsterdam by Ferry, but it was a while ago so I don't remember exactly how long. I took a bus to Dover, then the Ferry ride and then bus ride to Amsterdam. It doesn't seem realistic to me to do it for a day trip.

Agreed. It was definitely longer than a three hour ferry ride. The flight should be pretty short. Could you fly into or out of Amsterdam from NY instead? That will save you a few hours in the airport.
