Re: OK I love my puppy but...
OMG, just a couple weeks ago owen found some random poop on our walk and started eating it. i swear, i almost passed out when i realized what he had in his mouth. i wouldn't let him lick me for like 3 days.
did some research on the net when that happened, apparently it's instinctual and normal and can mean (but not always) that the dog is anxious or bored. i also read that you're not supposed to strongly discipline the dog when he does it because that can make it worse.

Re: OK I love my puppy but...
Yep...another thing Abby went through.
She grew out of it a LOT..then suddenly started again recently.
We bought the bitter spray and sprayed it immediately....After maybe 5-6 times, she never wanted to be bothered again........fast forward like 5 months and we had to start doing it again.
My Vet said if it continued he could give her a vitamin of sorts that would prevent it, but its also sold in like the Drs. Foster and SMith catalog and much cheaper. the Vet wanted to wait till she was a year old to start giving her anything like that.

Re: OK I love my puppy but...
Some breeds, like sheperds, were bred to do that so that enemy army troops couldn't track the officers and their dogs. It is disgusting. What about shaking a can of rocks when she's about to do it or adding garlic to her own food so that the taste isn't appealing (like appealing is the right word!)

Re: OK I love my puppy but...
Mine is 4 years old and still occassionally does this.
It's so gross.
He knows it's wrong too. He'll look at me, I'll say "NO" and he'll slooooowwly lower his head to grab it.
Little *******!!
We initially treated it just like any other behavior we didn't want. A firm NO and constant vigilance.
He eventually got it - now he only does it when he's trying to p!ss me off.

Re: OK I love my puppy but...
that's really interesting, that some breeds were bred to do that. makes a lot of sense for shepherds. maybe not as much for my little guy...
<---- (could you imagine him being of any use to any army? )
i am glad to hear that other people who have had this issue handled it like they would any other behavioral issue. after searching the internet i got all paranoid that i was going to make it worse by reacting the way i did (firm NO, making him drop the poop)... but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Oh God, we still go through this Mine too. Every now & again I'll catch one of them poop-eating so what I'll do is add some papaya enzyme to their food. Usually if they are eating their poop it can be an indication that they are not completely digestion.
A lot of puppies go through this though. They sell remedies for it, but to be honest none of them ever worked with me. One of the best things, in all reality was to teach the dogs "Leave it."

Re: OK I love my puppy but...
If I remember correctly - the vet told me to put meat tenderizer on Molly's food - and apparently that would give it a nasty taste (as if Poop tastes good normally?)
I would check with your vet though bc it was a year ago and I could be confused!

Re: OK I love my puppy but...
walk out with him every time you let him out to go to the bathroom, and pick up the poop (and throw it out) after he goes, that way he doesn't have access to it, and it'll keep the yard neat.

Re: OK I love my puppy but...
I put newspaper under his butt AS he poops....and pick it up right away. But once in a while I am not so quick and after I pick it up there is a little "resiude" (sorry tmi - he's on kennel cough meds and they make him um not as firm) - when I turn around he is back there licking it up - yiiiick!
It's getting better tho -- or maybe I am just getting faster!

I know, my puppy years ago did the same thing. I think they all do. Nothing you can do really except tell them "no".
