Re: what is excessing
When budget time comes around people low on the seniority list usually get excess letters stating that there is a possibility of losing your job. I got one last year but nothing happened, and I am high enough on the list that I didn't get one this year. However, you can still get excessed if you are tenured. All tenure does is allows the union to plead your case if you lose your job. If you are not tenured, you are just in a more vulnerable posiition if you were to lose your job.

Yup, tenure or no tenure... "last one hired, first one fired" in case of budget cuts.
The district is obligated to call back all previously excessed and qualified teachers when a position is being reinstated though... this could even be YEARS down the road... before they open up the hiring process to the public.
Sad, because we had an excellent member of our staff for SEVEN years who was excessed a few years ago because she was "low-man". Well, they then brought up another other staff member from the elementary level to the secondary who didn't know 10% of what she did, all because of seniority. It was quite a loss of an excellent staff member.

I have never heard of that, unless you are close with a staff member who knows of openings in another district. The district doesn't help you search for another job - all districts are going through the same thing with budget cuts and cutting spending.
