Families living out of state...how often

do you see each other??? I mean in terms of them coming here & you going there!!!

My parents basically broke the news to me last night via phone that they are definately moving & putting their house on the market here on LI! They are putting a bid in with a builder today on a house in Maine. I knew it was coming, but to hear it from my dad shattered me! Now I am having problems with my DH on how often we will see them! Last night was a big emotional roller coaster for me & I could use everyone's input!!

when i lived in los angeles, i would fly back to visit mom/dad in NY on Thanksgiving and during Christmas. they came to visit me once during the summer.

that was it. i wish it was more.

i do think there are some good airfares to portland, maine, though. $49 each way!

I live out of the country and in the last year, since having my little boy, I have seen my family maybe 6 times....before I usually saw them twice a year. But now because of the grandchild, I think I will probably see them 4/5 times a year.

eta...I never actually feel like I live far away from them because I speak to them at least once a day, sometimes more. Also, we skype and just keep in close contact. I am very close with my parents and do not feel very far from them at all.

i have a brother in philly that i see about every other month. my brother in upstate new york see about every 3 months. fh's sister in montana, we see once a year. she comes to ny once a year. we don't have enough vacation time to go see her. fh's sister that lives in nj, we see every 3 to 4 months. between hotel costs and no limited vacation time it is hard to see them. fh just got a job that he does not work weekends, so hopefullly we will make for weekend trips.

Both of my SIL's live OOS.

I have to say, DH's family sees each other a lot more often than most families in the same situation. DH and I don't go to them as often because he travels for business and that's the last thing he really wants to do on any holiday.

My IL's are semi-retired and go to MA about 3 or 4 times a year and then to WI about 3 times a year. My SILs come here at least twice a year with their kids but they are both in education so they have more time off. Granted until a few weeks from now, all of their grandchildren live OOS so that is what motivates their travel.

As soon as their new grandbabies come asnd because they are getting a bit older, the travel will slow down.

My mom lives in South Carolina and always comes at Christmas for about a week.

I'd say she probably comes up at least two other times a year for about the same stretch of time.

Because of the dogs, we don't go down there often but every other Easter we take a week and drive down with the dogs. Except this year ... we are flying down for a shorter amount of time ... which reminds me we need to book something for the boys!!



ETA: My brother lives outside of Boston and we rarely see him.

My brother and SIL live in NC, they try and come up 2 times a year. Not enough if you ask me, we ( mom and I) try and go down about 3-4 times a year. Thats not enough either. It stinks actually. But we do it.

Thanks ladies! I know that I can get some great airfare to Portland as I do that already (my brother is there). The drive doesn't bother me either as I have done that many times! My dad is retired & my mom will be until she finds a part-time teachers assistant job up there. I know they can travel to see us more & they will be willing. I am so close with my parents, so you can imagine, this is tearing me apart! I plan on speaking with my mom everyday if not more! I am just so scared to go through this & DH is being very hard on me (his entire family is in NY).

We don't have any kids yet & I know my parents will come down more to see us when that happens, but it is all so new to me & so scary!

When I was in CT and my parents were on LI- We would see eachother about 2x a month-sometimes less-during wedding planning-sometimes more!

Now that we are everywhere-but at the moment in GA- I saw my mom once-it's been a month we are here total- We went to Florida to see her-because she was visiting family...

We will see my parents and DHs parents next weekend, we are flying home... and three weeks after that we are flying home again-

kristen...i'm in the same boat. my parents live in florida. this yr, i'll be seeing them 3 times...2 of the times will be for a happy occasion. sometimes its hard to get away. i try to see them 2x's a yr. i'm always on the phone with them.

I usually see my Dad once a year; he lives in Houston. Sometimes less though since I share holidays with DH and his family.

first - WOW! I LOVE Maine! it is SO gorgeous up there. you will have a wonderful place to visit! I am jealous! lol

second - ME is not far at all. there are cheap flights there (or to NH) on JetBlue I believe. you can also drive, it's a gorgeous drive through CT, MA, NH & ME!

Thank you! I love Maine also! We already have a summer place there, so that is why I don't mind the drive. I have been doing it my entire life! Flying is even easier & more convient.

Just needed to prepare myself for the reality of them not being 2 miles away anymore!!!

It's definitely an issue with me & DH how much & when we travel to see them. When the holidays come, there are always arguments. We haven't quite worked it out yet.

My Dad and brother live in Florida- I see them every 2 or 3 months

My sister lives in Maryland- I haven't seen her since July- she is really busy with grad school and working full time

My family still lives in NY and I live in St Louis. I see them every 2-3 months. So about 4 times a year. They usually come here once and I go there 3-4 times.

My dad lives in GA, we see him about 2x a year.

My ILs live in FL, but have an apt up here too. They are up about about every other month for at least 2 weeks. For example, they came up at Thanksgiving for 2 weeks. Then they came this month for 2 weeks. They are coming at the end of March for 6 weeks. Then they will be back at the end of June, sometime this fall for my FSIL's shower and then in November for BIL's wedding.

My FIL live out of state. We see him every other month for a weekend- either he comes here, or we got there.

honestly, we live 1000 miles away from family and we get to see all sides of family, from parents, siblings, aunt/uncles, cousins, friends often. Obviously not as often as I wish, but every other month we average visitors. This is the first year it has slowed down, previously we had visitors every month sometimes 2x a month. I talk everyday to my sister, every other day to my mother, a couple times a week to my in-laws as well as get on the webcam with them and my sister. My dad is a couple times a month. I emailed daily....

I miss the want to come over for dinner? Come to our family BBQ... you know, but in time the visits are more meaningful than a quick, want to run to the store with me kind of thing...

the issue with the holidays is that we have our own family now and chose to pick our holidays and do every other year in NY for Christmas. It just works that way for us and our family.

the majority of my DHs family are in Florida. He goes down sometimes by himself for a quick visit or we go together. My MIL comes up once a year, my one BIL & SIL came up once.
Last summer two of my teenage nieces came up & stayed w/us for 2 weeks in the summer. We are doing that again this year. My aunt & uncle live upstate & they always come down for the major holidays.
DH & will probably move OOS in the future, but I'm taking my mom & grandma with me!

My husband's family comes monthly, for the most part. We last saw them for Tnanksgiving and they were coming back for Christmas, but we held off until March because DH flew to NY in Jan. So they see each other monthly, one way or another.

My parents live outside of Houston, Texas, mostly because my grandparents live there and they need to be there for them.

But we see each other about every 2-3 months. But Houston is pretty far away. I saw them at Christmas, my mom is here now, both parents are coming up in May and in July. I will probably go down in Aug and then we will go for Christmas. DH and I have a deal since his family is local we do holidays like Thanksgiving and stuff with them and we see them often. Then we go to Texas for about a week at a time.

I live in N.C. and my parents live on Long Island. We see each other on average every other month. Although we did see each other every month from Nov-Jan, but that was because of the holidays. It has not been bad at all.
