Re: quick question on grammer for first birthday

Sorry to be ignorant, but is the baby's name nicola or nicolas?

If it is nicola then it is nicola's first birthday.
if it is nicolas then it is nicolas's first birthday.

Re: quick question on grammer for first birthday

I would do Nicolas'... I was always taught that if a name ended in an S, then you just use an apostrophe after it, no extra S... But I know a lot of people who do it the other way too... honestly that way bugs me, lol!

I think either way is fine... see what the majority says and go with it! Chat Icon

Re: quick question on grammer for first birthday

I am a school consultant, and I was observing a student in middle school during a language arts class recently, and learned the following - the rule used to be if the name ends with S, then it would be Nicholas'

The rule has since changed, and either one is ok now - Nicholas' or Nicholas's - I was surprised to find this out, but supposedly thats what going down in the wacky world of grammar these days!!!

Re: quick question on grammer for first birthday

I say Nicholas'. If I got an invite that read Nicholas's I would think the person made a mistake.

Me three. In school I was always taught that if the name ended in an S the apostrophe goes at the end. So it would be Nicholas'.

I am also a stickler for grammar and would use Nicholas', but have recently learned (in graduate school/teaching elementary school) that the rules have changed and either way is acceptable. BS in my opinion. I'm old school. I say no extra s.

Just another example of how our country continues to lower the standards.

Re: quick question on grammer for first birthday

Both have always been acceptable -- Nicholas' or Nicholas's. I find Nicholas's to be awkward however, but it is correct. Adding the 's is more common in Great Britain.
