Neurosurgeon help?? (Hydrocephalus)

Has anyone dealt with prenatal hydrocephalus? And does anyone have any experience with a Dr. Steven Schneider in Nassau (Pediatric Neurosurgeon)? I would so appreciate it if anyone has any feedback.

We are meeting with him this week because our baby (I'm still PG) was diagnosed with a severe case of hydrocephalus. We've known for over a month now that the baby has hydrocephalus, but we thought it wasn't that bad. We just found out friday after reviewing the MRI that it is severe and doesn't look good. The baby may have severe brain damage when all is said & done. We are desperately praying that the baby doesn't have too many problems, and for now we just plan to do all we can and deal with it as it comes. I will have to deliver early (in the next few weeks). All the other doctors we have have been amazing so far, but Dr Schneider would be the one operating on our baby (to put a shunt in), so we want to make sure he is the right one.

Please, any info you have would be greatly appreciated. TY!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My co-worker's daughter had hydrocephilitus (post partum). I just asked her. She said he is excellent. He put the shunt in for her daughter.

Bedside manner isn't so wonderful but he is a terrific doctor. Dr. Mittler is her daughter's surgeon (also great). Schnieder is considered the #1.

Many hugs & prayers to you & your family.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My son did not have prenatal hydrocephalus, but he has had his share of seeing neurosurgeons, MRIs, etc. It was scary, because we were preparing ourselves for crainosynostosis, and in the end, his diagnosis was not bad at all, just positional plagiocephaly.

That being said...we've heard fantastic things about Dr. Schneider, and were told that he's one of the top ped. neurosurgeons in the area. We needed an appointment for my son ASAP, and could not wait for Schneider's schedule to open, so we saw his partner, Dr. Mittler. Dr. Mittler was also excellent, and were very happy with him.

We also saw Dr. Michael Egnor, and we loved him as well (affiliated with Stony Brook). We just wanted to see more than one neurosurgeon to get different opinions.

I hope everything turns out well for your baby. Let me know if there is anything I can do. Chat Icon

Thanks for finding out! I'm relieved to hear that he's a great Doctor. Bedside manner is not the most important to us- as long as we can get our questions answered and feel confident in his work, that's fine.

TY!Chat Icon Actually I've read that all 3 of those Dr's are part of the hydrocephalus organization. And Dr Schneider & Dr Mittler are from thesame office. I've been doing research on all of them and I'm hoping we really feel confident with at least one of them.

Re: Neurosurgeon help?? (Hydrocephalus)

My mother worked for a pediatric neurosurgeon for years and I asked her about him. She said he is an excellent Dr. and that he is with a great group. She also said that hydrocephalus can be actually quite common and that they can do surgery in-utero if they needed to.

My Mom knows a lot about these kinds of things so if you ever want me to ask her any questions for you I can. Just send me and FM and good luckChat Icon
