Hemorrhoid Question

Not to be gross! I haven't been on the chat for a while, but I thought it would be the perfect place to look for advice!

As of yesterday, Sunday...I have had terrible hemorrhoid problems! I haven't had this throughout my entire pregnancy. I am almost 39 weeks and scheduled for an induction on Monday, April 2nd. I have gestational diabetes and the baby seems happy as a clam where is...so the doctor wants to induce to make sure delivery size isn't an issue.

That said...I have been bleeding anytime I have gone to the bathroom and I drink metamucil every day...so constipation isn't the reason.

I called the doctor today and spoke to the nurse...they said to get Prep H and soak in baths or cool cloths. I told her I have my next doctor appt. Wed. morning and she said if the hemorrhoids are really bad they may send me to see the surgeon? What does that mean?

My mom said she had this problem very badly back in the day and all the pushing was a horror. She thinks I should ask the doctor about a c-section. I haven't done anything today but rest. I'm nervous now!

Anyone have this problem late in their pregnancy???

Thanks to all! Chat Icon

Re: Hemorrhoid Question

I have problems now with it and started at 20 wks.

I have seen the surgeon 3 times already.

Your options with a bad flare-up:

Home remedies:
- Preparation H or medication cream (higher strength!) from surgeon
- Sitz bath (warm bath for 10-20 minutes)
- Tuck pads (keep it tucked there for a few minutes while laying down) after each bowel movement

Surgeon:
- Incision if it's thrombosed (blood clot!). It takes 2-3 days to recoup. It's a quick fix up and swelling my be reduced but not all gone. But you will be relieved a bit.
- rubber bands (they can do it since you are 39 wks) other it can create false labor. I can do it at this stage since I am only 26.5 wks PG. This is a good alternative to the actual surgery. This is what I will be doing after childbirth.

They won't do the actual invasive surgery for me while PG. My surgeon only did it once in 25 years on a PG woman.

FM me if you need more detail.

I know it's not fun...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: talk to you OB. Mine is aware of it and we will discuss delivery. It can be a serious issue for me.

Is it possible that you haven't got hemmerrhoids but a fissure??? You might want to check with your doctor about this, they are extremely painful and lingering!

Re: Hemorrhoid Question

DO NOT SCHEDULE A C-SECTION JUST BECAUSE OF HEMMORROIDS!

Just had to get that out LOL

I got them with my first pregnancy, I used some OTC remedies, and after my son was born, I continued using the OTC stuff, and they went away.

Got em again with my 2nd, and same thing.

I have them again this time. But, because this is going to be my last baby, once I am "done", then I will see a procotologist (surgeon) about having them treated for good.

I would ask about this too. My fissure was misdiagnosed for MONTHS as a hem.

Does it feel like you are pooping razor blades? Is the prep H/tucks stinging instead of feeling good? Does it hurt to walk/sit? Is there a good amount of red blood after you go? Does the pain linger after you go to the bathroom?

I've suffered from fissures since DD birth and even how painful they are, I WOULD not sched a C section cause of it. The drugs you get to numb you, the lack of eating, the dr's moving around your organs will just create their own monster and slow down your digestive tract anyways, so it really won't help down there.

To decide which is the lesser of 2 evils. I am scared to death of pushing, but I would rather deal with a hem/fissure and have a vaginal birth, which recovery from is much easier, than have major surgery. That's just me though.

FM me if you have any questions about fissures, I can say i have become an expert on these stupid things.

ETA: My ob/gyn was the one who kept telling me they were hems, it was the surgeon who looked at it for 2 seconds diagnosed a fissure.
An acute fissure can be healed with at home treatments and diet changes.

Re: Hemorrhoid Question

You are all the best. I appreciate you being honest...I have my doctor's appt. tomorrow so I will update you then.

As for me...it's only when I have a bowel movement or think I have to and do any sort of push/straining...no matter how easy it is...there is a pool of blood and bright red blood on the t.p. Otherwise I see nothing the rest of the day.

Other than discomfort I don't really have pain, just a slightly sort and uncomfortable feeling. The Tucks pads don't burn or bother me and the Prep H I started using yesterday.

My mom said he had them really bad with me and after hours of pushing and a tough birth she had hems the size of golf balls and was recovering for a long time. That was 30 years ago and I don't think they would have let her go that far along. I really want to go natural if I can, but considering how easily I seem to bleed with the slightest strain I can't imagine really pushing!

I will let you know what the doctor says. thanks to everyone for your stories and advice. I know hems are sometimes a normal part of pregnancy, but this late and close to the day freaked me out. My sleeping the last week or so has been virtually nonexistent and this isn't helping!

Stay tuned!Chat Icon
