breast milk
Has anyone ever tasted their breast milk? I have and it has a sweet taste. But after freezing it for a few days when I defrost it, it doesn't taste the same. It doesn't taste sour, but it doesn't taste good. I did a test once by freezing it for a day, and when I defrosted it, it tasted exactly the same as it did before putting it in the freezer, but if I freze it a little longer something happens. has anyone else had this problem. I would like to freeze some, b/c I pump extra, but don't want it to go to waste. how much is a deep freezer? How long is it good in a regular refrgerator? Thanks

Re: breast milk
6 hours out, 6 days in the fridge and 6 months in the freezer is what I've been told. I've given DS milk from the freezer and he's never turned it away. So I guess even if it's a little different it's not enough to make them not drink it.

Re: breast milk
I had that, I pumped literally a whole freezers once and it was rancid when I defrosted it. Apparently from reading further I have a lipase in my milk and once its frozen, it causes the milk to go rancid and its, unfortunately, unusable.
You can prevent this by pasturizing your milk by boiling it, letting it cool down and then freezing it.

I was told the same, the 666 rule.
I've also given DD frozen milk from the freezer.
I have though never tasted it.

I had the same problem and had to throw away a ton of milk. Whether I froze it for a day or a month, it was rancid.

Re: breast milk
i rotated the milk out every month. thats the best way to do it. i would pump everyday and have some extra. freeze the extra and one week out of the month give dc a week of frozen breastmilk. at the end i had so much i ended up chucking 2 week supply.

Re: breast milk
how do you know it's rancid if you don't taste it? Does it smell bad? Look funny? I plan on freezing some milk and giving it to DS in a month when i'm away for a day. but I don't want to find out I have rancid frozen breast milk last minute

Re: breast milk
thanks for bumping helene.
i don't think this is my problem though. i have used frozen milk before and it was fine. i really think something happened like my freezer wasn't closed all the way and they started to defrost and then refroze. i have to reevaluate where i store it in the freezer because it's close to the wall right there when you open the door.
ugh!!
